It would take 714 years for the average Portland, OR resident to earn what Greg Oden earned in 5 years ($20.8M)

At this rate even if Greg could rehab and get back to the NBA, you would have to think he is out all of next year too, which basically means 2014? Maybe?

Is it really though? One's a business with millions of dollars on the line, your analogy is based on whether a person is a heartless bastard, or not.

That's why taxes are a good thing, because at least his money went to Portland schools. Of course, in reality the taxes cramped his job-creating moxie, so we should get rid of them.

And, of course, the same thing would be true if Greg had stayed healthy and played well. And the only difference between the two scenarios is that in one of them Greg would've played a sport where grown men jump and down after a ball. Would that have made everything just and fair?

Yes this is scary that he can't even rehab without chipping of cartilage from his knee. Makes you think it's more likely he retires then plays a full season of basketball again. He needs to be concerned about just walking the rest of his life when dealing with future rehabs.

I'm beyond having some fear of Oden leaving our team and becoming an all-star someplace else. Hell I think I might welcome that sight, I'd rather see the guy finally have some healthy seasons of basketball at this point even if its not in Portland.

Should someone have been fired for picking Len Bias? Or what about Reggie Lewis? Are you a good business manager if you fire someone for something LITERALLY UNPREDICTABLE, or are you just a moron who wants to blame someone because you lost money through bad luck?

Of course, what people usually do at this point is claim that it was predictable, and that they knew all along. Thus proving themselves to be completely full of bullshit.

I'm feeling fairly sick reading he has to have another MF surgery. What bad luck for a supposed great and nice person. I wanted to at least see him return to the court healthy at some point but now i'm just hoping he retires before he screws himself up so badly he can't walk in 20 years.

Yeah agreed. He will be out all of next year (2012-13). If somehow he is finally healthy for the season after that, it really takes guys like KMart, ZBo, Amare, a year to get back to top form. So the 2013-14 year would be Oden's "tune-up" season.

So even if Oden successively comes back from this latest surgery to become a dominant big man your talking about that not being until the 2015 playoffs.

All 3 of Greg Oden's microfractures have been non-contact microfractures. Not caused by a specific incident, etc.

Chad Buchanan says need for this surgery was independent of previous microfracture on left knee & independent of fractured left patella.

Buchanan refused to say, when asked directly, that receiving clearance to play basketball is still a possibility for Greg Oden in the future

Blazers Acting GM Chad Buchanan on if this is career-ending for Greg Oden: "The doctors haven't talked about that. Greg is still very young in relative terms for a professional basketball player. He's recovered from a couple of these before. His last 2 microfracture lesions have healed fine. There's no reason to think that he couldn't come back as long as he shows the work ethic and desire that he has in the past to come back from that. I think that's premature to speculate anything past that."

If he doesn't retire he should retire. How is this even in question at this point? His body just isn't built for the wear and tear of rehab, let alone the grind of an NBA season.

I'm sorry, but what is the color of the sky on your home planet?

There is nothing "unpredictable" about a drug abuser ODing. That's why smart teams screen draftees for that sort of behavior.

As for Lewis - I would say there was a high probability that the Celtics' medical staff was negligent. Far less serious heart problems have been identified and treated by team docs. (including LMA)

If anything, your examples disprove your point.

It was the first time Len Bias had tried coke and he died from it. At least thats what they said on ESPN when discussing him on one of there documentary things

I have nothing to say on this. No emotions, no reaction. There's none left for Greg, which is terrible. I want to hate him, but I can't. He didn't ask for any of this to happen to him, and neither did we. Enjoy Dental School, Greg.

Chad Buchanan: it was possible that Oden's left ankle blood clots could have been season-ending if microfracture hadn't been necessary

There may or may not be any connection between the surface damage and rehab. The damage could have been there since the last time he had MF surgery. In fact, Chad said they were prepared this time (obviously) for this to be the case.

Exactly why doing MF makes sense, if you're going to be out for the whole season you might as well peform a surgery that has been known to make you stronger in the long run, not just "clean up" an area.
