hey yall, i lurk in here occasionally, and like reading your guys take on the warriors. my perception on monta is that he has a fair amount of trade value in the league, but some of the monta trade ideas i read in here are basically salary dumps. i personally think he would net you guys a nice piece or two in the right deal, am i delusional? are you guys so sick of him you just want to give him away?
you'll get mixed responses in here. i think everybody would be willing to trade him for a legit big man. but that's much easier said than done. personally, i think it's going to be nearly impossible to get decent return for him in a trade...he's a very good bargain at $11m/year. however, i think that most of us have resigned to the fact that we'll never get over the hump with him as our franchise player. yeah, he'd be a nice 2 guard in a complete team, but our team is far from complete. in theory, he seems to be our best trade piece, i'm just very skeptical that we'll get anything worthwhile in return. love the guy, he's provided much entertainment over the years...but if it makes the team better, he's gotta go. but to answer your question, i certainly am not on board with just "giving him away."
The problem is that we're stuck in NBA purgatory with him. Too good to get a top 5 pick, not good enough to make the playoffs (and not even close to being able to advance in the playoffs). But when you start thinking about trading him you have to ask yourself, if hes not good enough to get it done with us then why would anyone give up anything too valuable to get him? Contenders would probably love to have him as an uber sixth-man type, but they won't swap one of their core pieces who actually plays defense/rebounds/etc. for Monta and they likely have no prospects of any clout. Crappy teams probably don't want to add him mid-season because he'll lose them ping pong balls in the lottery while costing them prospects. Bad teams would also have to make sure he fits at SG next to their PG since he would start for them, and that makes things exponentially more difficult. Basically we're stuck with a flawed "big 3" right now and any Monta trade would require that Monta be the best player in the deal. It seems like our owner keeps dreaming about moving Monta for a just-as-good big man or a player "just as good" as Monta. But thats not happening. Hes too flawed of a player for anyone to give up a quality two way player for. Most likely you'll get a few nice role players or an expiring and some marginal prospects. What would you say hes worth 3rainiac? Maybe we're too down on him. He is a pretty spectacular scorer and you have to wonder what he could do playing with another elite player. Hes just such a liability on defense and ball-stopper at times (part of this could be coaches relying on his iso's so much though). We're desperately in need of defense and size, and we have to run offense as a team. Monta's just not working for us so even getting rid of him would allow us to get out of this rut and start looking to rebuild.
i would think you should be able to move him for a 10-20 pick and a useful player or two...hard to name names though
that's the thing...i don't think we'd get any big man that would be worth the trade. last season people were talking about trading him for Iguodala...that was the only semi-realistic potential monta trade that i've been on board with.
I think our biggest problem is many feel that Curry and Ellis can't coexist together. We suffer defensively because of the size disadvantage at the two guard spot and the fact we're not taking care of the ball and executing plays. Plus, both need the ball to be effective on the offensive end and one is seen as being a better team player while the other is seen as being the best go-to guy when all else fails (and it fails a lot). Curry is more efficient as a player in terms of shooting, but Ellis gets inside the lane more easily. Curry is about 6% higher in field goals that were made based their assist, but he also happens to the turn the ball over a lot more either because of bad passes or being careless with the ball. Curry is younger and his game doesn't rely as much on quickness or jumping high to put up big numbers. We have two good players that play the same position just about and we should move one of them if the right trade came along. Like what good is it if you have both Steve Nash-light and no-defense Russel Westbrook sharing the back court together? It just doesn't work, especially if you need more at other positions. I think we could use another wing who is more dynamic and maybe give Klay Thompson a shot at trying to be the big guard (Maybe his movement off the ball is what the warriors need). Dwright is a bit of a one or two trick pony. I would love to see us try to grab somebody of impact at the small forward spot that can do other stuff besides cast up threes (hell, we could have even kept Morrow if we wanted that kind of play). Obviously we need a center. Biedrins makes more fouls than points or rebounds. He's useless if he plays like this. Kwame Brown was even starting to look good and his offense might actually be slightly better. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/ellismo01.html http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/curryst01.html
I like him primarily for his defense. He's still a guy that needs the ball in his hands to be effective at offense. I guess if he played small forward for us that'd be nice. Then Klay can run around backdoor and shoot the midrange jumpers all day. If he channeled Rip Hamilton for us that'd be excellent
