It won't matter for the season, we're pretty much out of it. It'll be Bickerstaff who takes over and ordered to get some of the new guys some run as by then, we would have already traded some of our assets like Wallace and company. After the regular season, we need to reach out to Jerry Sloan and Larry Brown for starters.
I basically took a look at the NBA teams that made it into the post season in 2004-2007 and checked out who their coaches were.
I think it was Fez's suggestion, but David Blatt intrigues me, Monty after he gets fired (or escapes if you prefer?), I'm sure there are plenty of other young, hungry, innovative guys I'm not thinking of.
Phil Jackson. Paul's rich enough to buy him out of retirement. I think the triangle would do wonders for Aldridge. It would help us not continue to look for our PGOTF. I realize he isn't going to come to a rebuilding team, however.
I used to want Jackson when we had Roy, Aldridge and potentially Oden. But, with this current roster, we're not getting Phil Jackson. Jackson is financially set for life and wants to maintain his legacy. He will only accept a coaching situation with a team with at least two superstars that is poised to win a title. And Portland isn't even close. I'd be fine with Jerry Sloan. At least we'd run an effective pick and roll for Aldridge, and maybe even (finally) learn how to defend the pick and roll. Other than that disaster with the Knicks (I blame Isiah for that), Larry Brown's teams have improved everywhere he's coached (and he's coached a LOT of places). He had Charlotte in the playoffs two years ago and looks where they're at now. Probably the best thing on his resume is his work in Detroit. He won a title with a team without any superstars. Those Detroit teams were better than the sum of their parts. Maybe that's just what the Blazers need. Someone who can get more, not less, out of a roster without one, or more, superstars. I also like the David Blatt and Mike Budenholzer suggestions. Hell, given a few minutes, I could probably name 50 coaches that would do a better job than Nate's doing. BNM
If we are going to rebuild the team we'll have to have one more season of really sucking to get a top 3 draft pick so I think we should hire Isiah Thomas as head coach.
David Blatt Mike D'Antoni -- He's in a similar situation as Nate is in. No coach can win with those two ball-stopping, egomaniacs.
Another option I've advocated in the past. It drives me nuts when people say we shouldn't fire Nate because no one better is available. Between Sloan, Larry Brown, Blatt, Budenholzer and Laimbeer, that's five guys I'd take in a heartbeat over Nate. And, that's barely scratching the surface. There are other assistants, college coaches and international coaches to consider. Even if the guy you want won't be available until the off season, I see no reason to keep Nate around any longer. He's clearly lost this team. Might as well get him out of the locker room to prevent further damage and let Bernie pilot the sinking SS Minnow at this point. BNM
