The lawyer explained the budgetary details and the jury cut the request to $3M. It will cost that much to bring the girl up to the level of a 3-year-old by the time she's 21. All her life she'll be in diapers, slur her speech incomprehensively, etc. The woman won't hold a job and the man's career will be much less since he must live near specialized health providers only in big cities, up half the night from the screaming, etc.

But even if they spend it on frivolous things, the clinic deserves it, for punitive reasons. This will motivate them to get their act together. How many healthy babies have been aborted because of their careless diagnoses?

As for "we will all pay in increased hospital fees and someone could have adopted her," no one would do so without government subsidies probably costing more than $3M.

My cousin has a child born with MS, Autism, and a health/developmental issues. Sure, nobody told her the child wouldn't be born with those things, but she and her partner foot the entire bill herself.

If you are absolutely sure that they have never availed themselves of the many subsidized programs which help such children, then it sounds like child abuse, so you'd better keep it quiet. The kid is suffering mightily because of their neglect.
