I want to watch Jiro dreams of sushi so I can talk shit on facebook about people who mix wasabi + soy sauce some more.
yeah thats fucked up, nothing sets off a well done steak like ketchup, everyone knows that but for realz, are you talking about rolls or sashimi? cuz rolls aint no prime steak tell me what the fuck you are talking about
Wasabi + Soy Sauce is what white crackaz do at japanese restaurants. For rolls, I guess it doesn't matter since those are super inauthentic to begin with. If its a real japanese chef, its kind of insulting to do. If its a mexican sushi chef, knock yourself out i guess with that discount sushi. Its also insulting to have pieces of rice in your soy sauce dish.
is it a wasabi thing or a soy sauce thing? cuz they always give me wasabi with my sushi i could see it being insulting to pour soy sauce all over some bomb ass toro though, and for the record, i dont put a damn thing on a nice steak, except my meat smackers
Well, its just kind of bad practice. The sushi chef wants you to taste the sushi a certain way, wasabi addition or soy sauce addition should be a delicate mix. Its just kind of sloppy behavior. Its like you're trying to mask the flavor of the fish with such a strong combination of opposing flavors mixed in a slurry. http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?/topic/110154-sushi-etiquette/
To me, its like people salting their food at a restaurant before tasting it. They do it out of a ritual. Its not bad to add a little wasabi if you feel the need to augment the flavor of a certain fish, but generally you should trust the sushi chef, unless they suck. But mixing both is a little weird.
i eat like a goddamn aristocrat, napkin in my lap and all that, and unagi is fukking gross. i would use the pickled ginger to make a soft taco toro is my joint tho
no, its actually a dried and ground up root powder, that is then usually mixed with a quantity of liquid (water) to create a paste. some people think it is in bad taste, when in fact, it is delicious
