We always have threads on underrated/overrated players, Lets do it with coaches.Underrated: Rick Carlisle/Mike FratelloOverrated: Maurice Cheeks
Underrated: Byron Scott gets my vote easily. He is a professional, he demands the best out of his players (but not in a "demanding" tone), he is a workaholic, he is awesome with the media, he doesn't take crap (if you keep messing up, you will be benched, no matter how good you are), and he took the Hornets team (after all that Katrina turmoil) with a shaky looking roster to a much better status than anyone guessed. They were in the playoff race until the last few weeks of the season. People also forget he's been to the NBA Finals as well. I love Byron Scott, and to me, there is no coach in the league that deserves most underrated more than him.
Definately Byron Scott as underrated. Just look at how he turned the Hornets around. He took the Nets to 2 NBA finals and the only reason he was fired was Jason Kidd
Underrated-Byron Scott and Mike FratelloOverrated-Mike D'Antoni (He tells them to run, and is suddenly a genius).
Underrated: Rick Adleman, Byron Scott, Rick Carlisle, Mike Fratello, and Eddie Jordan TO AN EXTENT.Overrated: Flip Saunders, Mike D'Antoni, and Mo Cheeks.
I don't know how D' Antoni got a coach of the year award. His halfcourt sets are just pick and rolls relying on Diaw and Nash. The rest of the time the teams in a fast break.
Underrated: Rick Carlisle is very underrated IMO. He has had to deal with so many things since his stay in Indiana. He has had to deal with tons of injuries of his good players, a crapload of suspensions from ron ron and others, and yet he still finds ways to get to the playoffs each year when he is shorthanded. He definatley gets my vote.Overrated: Larry Brown WAS the most overrated coach by far when he still had a team....if he gets one, he will be again. I agree with Mo Cheeks though. People say that he just had a bad spot in portland with the attitudes but it had to be more than that. He doesnt win werever he goes...

He seems like a great person, but as a coach, I question his ability.I don't think Fratello is underrated. I actually think he is overrated if you look at his entire career. He really hasn't done much, IMO.Underrated: Rick Carlisle - Might play boring basketball, but knows how to win. Built a great foundation in Detroit, before Larry came in.Jerry Sloan - His teams always compete and make it difficult for you to win, even with inferior talent.Mike Dunleavy - Did a good job in LA (twice) and in Portland, but never got respectRick Adleman - Will get a job soon.Overrated: Doc Rivers - Failed in Orlando and is failing in Boston, IMO. Mo Cheeks - Doesn't develop players. A great guy, but that only gets so farGeorge Karl - Very good regular season records hides his middling playoff record.Mike Montgomery - Okay, he doesn't get much respect, but he should not have an NBA job, but because he does, he is overrated.Mike Fratello - look at his entire career. There was a reason he was out of coaching for so long and it wasn't because he choose to be out of it.
I cant think of any underrated coaches of tops and i dont want to agree with every1Overated: Jeff Van Gundy
