So you think Phoenix or NJ will target him? Because the Blazers woul dbe beyond stupid to bring in a 39 year old PG for a rebuilding project, and I don't think Williams will come here
No reason to waste a lottery pick in a rich front court draft on a PG that can't shoot if we got Williams
I just do not think Flynn is very good, but given PG's we have all unfortunately suck. Flynn is > Nolan who amazingly seems to be getting worse the more he plays if that is possible! IMO we need entirely new players at PG next year, I'd rather not see any of these guys back.
I just think Flynn is a great back-up PG for us. We need the leader PG that can run the offense; and we bring in Flynn off the bench.
"great backup", nah I don't think so. maybe adequate at best. I think we've seen Flynn do okay and for us Blazer fans, given our horrendus PG play this yr, that might seem better than it really is given how use to mediocrity we have become. Nothin against Flynn, but he has some significant limitations IMO.
Our fawning over mediocre PG's (myself included) reminds me of this exchange between Michael Douglas and Michael J Fox from "The American President": I think that we've gone so long without adequate PG play that many of us are willing to drink sand rather than hold out for actual water.
The team will be best served by having a backup who has the potential to be a starting-level PG. Houston had that with Dragic... and it's why they were willing to dump Flynn. Flynn is still young and he's been OK at Portland, but the bar (as others have alluded to) is quite low in Portland, and it's been set pretty low for Flynn because he's been such a bad player the last couple of years. I'm happy the team is giving Flynn a tryout, and I hope that he proves me wrong, but I don't see him being a starting PG for any decent team in the NBA any time soon... and Portland should be looking to add young players that have that potential. If he's cheap, and there's no other option? I'm all for Flynn coming back. I would imagine he'll be cheap (why would a team give him much money the way his career has gone?) but I'd also like to think that the team might be adding another, superior, option in the offseason. Ed O.
The new coach won't require top individual defensive talent like McMillan did, which made trades and FAs much harder to find. Flynn might very well be here.
I'd say 80% of the time, above-average to excellent physical talent is how you make it in this league. He doesn't have it and doesn't have the skills to be part of the other 20%. Simple as that.
