The Suns and Mavs with the Spurs will battle it out for the #1 seed. Maybe the Suns can take it since the Mavs division should be even tougher this year....I do think the Mavs are the best and there are some ?'s on the Suns so we'll see.</div>damn, i totally forgot about that, and to think I was one of the people who supported that change :brickwall:

UPDATE: <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Mavs take run at free agent GeorgePosted on Tue, Aug. 01, 2006By DWAIN PRICESTAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITERDEVEAN GEORGE DALLAS -- Devean George could be a member of the Mavericks as soon as today. The Los Angeles Lakers' free-agent forward talked with Mavs owner Mark Cuban and coach Avery Johnson on Monday and said he is leaning toward signing with the Mavs."I love Avery's mentality," George said. "He likes guys that play hard, [play] defense and rebound."Donnie Nelson, the Mavs' president of basketball operations, said to expect some news from his franchise today.George is said to have narrowed his choices to the Mavs and Phoenix Suns. The Mavs have offered George a one-year, $2 million contract, which is the remaining money from the $5.2 mid-level exception after the Mavs gave Denver Nuggets free-agent swingman Greg Buckner a first-year salary of $3.2 million. After giving free agent Marcus Banks $3.6 million of their $5.2 mid-level exception, the Suns could only offer George a first-year salary of $1.6 million.A 6-8, 235-pound seven-year veteran, George won NBA titles with the Lakers during his first three years in the league -- 2000, '01 and '02. He also was the fifth starter on the Lakers team that lost to the Detroit Pistons in five games during the 2004 NBA Finals. The signing of George would give the Mavs 14 players with guaranteed contracts and leave them with one spot to sign one of their rookie free agents who played on their summer league team.www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sport...170549.htm</div>

Now official: <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Mavs ink Devean GeorgeBy ART GARCIAStar-Telegram Staff WriterThe Mavericks completed their off-season shopping spree by coming to terms with free agent Devean George, his agent confirmed Tuesday. The former Los Angeles Lakers forward is signing a two-year deal for $4.2 million, with a player option for the second year. George, 28, has spent his entire seven-year career with the Lakers and was a key part of three championship teams.?Devean is going to be a Maverick,? his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said. ?He?s excited. We went through a number of free-agent options, and we felt, because of his experience, it would be a great fit. He wants to help the Mavs win a championship.?George has averaged 6.0 points and 3.3 rebounds in 429 career games, with 66 starts. Injuries limited the 6-foot-8 swingman to 15 games two years ago, but Bartelstein said his client is healthy and primed for a full season.?He?s going to have a great season,? Bartelstein said. With the player option, George can test the market again next summer. Bartelstein, however, said George hopes to remains with the Mavs long-term.George will compete for minutes with Jerry Stackhouse and rookie Maurice Ager in the swingman rotation behind starters Josh Howard and Greg Buckner. The Mavs currently have 14 players under contract, one less than the maximum. The plan is to fill that final spot in training camp. The addition of George is the last of several moves designed to upgrade the team since the loss to Miami in the NBA Finals. The Mavs have added veterans Buckner, Austin Croshere and Anthony Johnson.<span style="color:#003399"><a href="http://"http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/15172874.htm"" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/15172874.htm" target="_blank">http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/15172874.htm</span></a></a></div> And hopefully now we can get that press conference and players introductions. The Mavs have always waited until they got all their players, and the press signals the end of the offseason. Now let's lock up Pops or Vroman for the final spot and get ready for the Spurs opening night.

Again,I don't know how big of an impact he will have but IMO he is better than Adrian Griffen and will will fill Griffen's role very well. George is an outstanding hustler and has a very nice leaping ability which makes him a good rebounder. His only problem is that he is injury prone and is known to take bad shots. He was a good pickup for 4.2 mill.I think he will do well under Avery Johnson and the Dallas Mavericks.

I don't know if he fills Griff's role, I think that is more for Buckner. I think George won't get a whole lot of playing time, just a nice backup in case of injuries. More of a Marquis Daniels role, up and down with minutes all year. But like that he's a good hustler and rebounds well. I also, like the fact he can stroke it from downtown. He'll be a nice zone buster for us.

He is not that great from outside but he can hit it from out there so I guess he will definitely need to be guarded.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>He is not that great from outside but he can hit it from out there so I guess he will definitely need to be guarded.</div> He's a spot up shooter and can hit his share, all we need is someone out there to be a threat and be able to bust zone defense. I think the players we've brung in George, Croshere, Johnson, Ager and Buckner, all not great three point shooters but good enough opposed to the ones of last year, where teams can't fall in on defense and play zone. Their respectable three point shooters, except Ager as he's a rookie.

Bump. Wow I guess we didn't know how great of a player George is. Especially on the defensive end. He is our version of Bruce Bowen.

^ Yep. The guy is beastly. Against Houston...wow. Without him we would've lost that game for sure. He played damn good again against L.A.. Glad to see he's doing well here.

George is not a low IQ player. He has been great for Dallas. I don't know where you are getting all this that he is slow and has low IQ. Neither are true.

Thing about his IQ, even if it's low. I can't comment as I have not watched many Laker games over the year. But he's not in a situation that he would blow a game for us due to his supposed low IQ. I don't think we'll be giving the George the ball anytime soon in a delicate situation.Looking back, I think I was spot on my assessment, only missing out on his minutes. I did not think he would come in and be our backup 4. Very surprizing and ddh called it on LMF. But I expected good hustle defense, rebounds, and his spot up jumper. And he's providing all that. Probably the steal of the offseason.
