That would look so much better than the current wells building. HUGE difference. With regard to KOIN, at the minimum, could the blue top be replaced by something different? What role does it play? I don't know what technically "goes with" brick, but there has to be something other than clunky blue metal (or what looks like metal).

Powell's and their group are thinking ahead; downsizing in the future?

Plan to convert 'Powell's technical books' into 7-story apartment building (North Pearl Dist.); current two-floor building to be demolished.

This is one of many 6/7-floor buildings being proposed for the Pearl District. An area already dense with these mid-rises. Maybe they're going for that Barcelona type of density but I want more height variety!

as cool as that image of Barcelona looks, it's very repetitive. I would want more variation.

That is also not the heart of Barcelona, really. Not in the sense that the Pearl is with it's proximity to downtown. That area is mainly residential (I lived on one of the blocks towards the top of the pic), but regardless, I agree a more diversely designed Pearl would be ideal.

    Powell's apartment rendering.

    :edit:

This will be the new student housing for PNCA.

    Awesome location, too!

Some of the project stalled or killed by the ultra-conservative PDC since 2006-2007:

[dead -- site re-appraised; 325' residential tower on a 1/4 block plot. Would have made the biggest impact on the skyline of any of the projects during the boom.]

I think if the blue top was replaced with a dome or widened and made taller it could make the KOIN tolerable to look at.

New research from Public Policy Polling finds that Seattle, Wash., and Portland, Ore., are America's most favorably viewed cities. Conversely, Detroit is the nation's least favorably viewed city.

The report found that 57 percent of respondents in the poll view Seattle favorably, compared with 14 percent who view it unfavorably. Similarly, Portland has a favorability rating of 52 percent with only 12 percent taking a negative view of the City of Roses.

In other words, if the Pacific Northwest were a politician, it would be more popular than President Obama and Mitt Romney.

Perhaps not coincidentally, a recent Yahoo News story found Seattle and Portland to be the top two best cities for hipsters.

    The city is hip!

Check out the AP photo they used! That photo has to be at least 20 years old.

^Always wondered how they built those bridge foundations in the water. How in the hell do they stop the water to even start construction?

My understanding is that before this step, they make a big tube that goes to the dirt, then they pump out the water. Then they start with the metal.
