This is moot, because they can't pay him. They are maxed out and he would be pure luxury tax fodder. If he wants to make money, he will end up somewhere else that will pay him more--and someone will. Having said that, if he did end up in Miami, then I would speculate it would bring a very quick end to his rehab. Given the lack of maturity he has shown to handle partying and alcohol . . .
I'd be shocked if he gets more than the veteran minimum. He's already out for all of next season, too. By the time he gets back into a game, at best, it will be nearly 4 full years since he played in a game. His last game played was 12/5/09, and the 2013 season opens ~ 11/1/13. Who is going to pay more than a nominal amount for a guy that has had 3 MF surgeries, a cracked patella, and hasn't set foot on the court in any meaningful way for almost 4 years?
He can pick and choose all he wants but there hasn't been a pro-athlete to successfully come back from three MF procedures. Has there ever been a pro-athlete to have that many?
Maybe Greg should try walking without having to have microfractures before he talks about playing again
Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje, Ha, and Jason Jennings help prove this point. If any of them had been even 6'9", they would have never made an NBA roster.
Doesn't surprise me. Riley will get his big man one way or the other. Oden, LBJ, Wade and Bosh. The wings are scary on that team. But if Greg can stay healthy. So are the bigs.
I don't know any team that would pay more than vet minimum to start. He would likely get that and a team option.
There's definitely more than enough evidence to give me a rock solid theory, but real proof? Oden staying healthy and winning rings in Miami would do the trick.
