Per tweets from his dodgy manager as well as Ariel Helwani. A lot of people are taking this opportunity to rag on him for proselytizing when he seems to have some impurities of his own but I'm not really down with that. Everyone makes mistakes (and God isn't real anyway so what does it matter). No word yet on what the fallout for this might be. Other fighters who have made this mistake in the recent past include Ross Pearson, Josh Neer, and Chris Leben. As far as I know the UFC doesn't have a policy when it comes to extracurriculars like this (re: Rampage's vehicular rampage) so it seems that he'll skate as far as professional punishment goes.
Re: Jon Jones destroys his Bentley in drunk driving accident Jones reportedly demolished his Bentley when he ran into a roadside pole in upstate New York near Ithica at 5:00am today. He was taken into custody by Broome County Sheriffs and was released on bail several hours later. Jones suffered minor injuries. There were passengers in his car but their status is currently unknown--they are assumed unharmed.
Re: Jon Jones destroys his Bentley in drunk driving accident “I can confirm that Jon Jones was arrested early this morning on suspicion of DUI. While the facts of this situation are still being gathered and situated, First Round Management fully supports Jon and we are asking for fans and media to respect the privacy of Jon and his family during this time.” –Malki Kawa, Jon “Bones” Jones’ Manager Nice one, Malki. Way to work your company name into that press release. All class.
Re: Jon Jones destroys his Bentley in drunk driving accident Maybe this will take him off of his high horse. What a moron.
Re: Update: Jon Jones issues apology following DUI crash “Man I haven’t added anyone new to my Facebook page in like three years and right now I’m so glad that I haven’t. It has literally been sickening to have so many people try to kick me while I’m down. At the same time, I totally understand, I gave them the leeway to. I screwed up, big time. Just needed to say thank you to all you guys for being amazing friends/supporters. Always having to deal with so many critics, haters and fickle mma fans, I almost forgot how strong of a home base I had (607 and people that knew me before I was a champion fighter). Although the hell that will come with this hasn’t even started yet, I want you guys to know how much better you’ve all made me feel, not only about this situation but about life, everything. It’s good to feel that people are there and care. With that being said, I felt I should apologize to you first. I’m truly sorry to those of you that I may have embarrassed in any way, to those of you with kids that I may have let down. I will prove to them as well as to myself, that no matter what is happening in life, we can always work our way back and make things even better than before. Reading you guys uplifting comments was a great reminder for me to not give up on who I am or all the hateful people. I’m not gonna allow this situation to outweigh the positive. I love you guys right back and I promise to make things right. PS sorry about the terrible grammar ” - Jon Jones
Re: Update: Jon Jones issues apology following DUI crash Hmm... dunno if you have to be a "hater" to say something nasty about JJ after he drove his Continental (top speed: 198mph) drunk and crashed with a passenger in the car. Could've been a lot worse. Jones has kind of always been obsessed with haters, though. He can hardly get through an interview without going there.
Re: Update: Jon Jones issues apology following DUI crash Seriously, he starts off his apology with whining about being kicked while hes down and doesn't understand why people criticize him for playing the victim and coming off as being better than everyone else. Hes right that it may not be fair. But that's what being the champ is. Plenty of people hate A. Silva, GSP, formerly Brock, etc. not to mention the powerhouse teams in any other sport. Success breeds a lot of people waiting for you to fall. Get used to it.
Re: Update: Jon Jones issues apology following DUI crash JJ has plead guilty. http://mmajunkie.com/news/28944/ufc-champ-jon-jones-pleads-guilty-to-dwi.mma
Well that night he was photographed with two buddies so it makes sense. Any word on the punishment? I'm expecting a fine and a license suspension.
Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Action News learns new information about the crash involving UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones. In court Tuesday, Jones pled guilty to DWI, but was he driving alone? According to police reports, there were two women riding in Jon Jones' 2012 Bentley when he hit a telephone pole on Binghamton's west side early in the morning on May 19th. Both were injured. Cara Johnson, 25, was in the front passenger seat and Michele Vojtisek, 25, was sitting in the back passenger seat. When Jones crashed, air bags deployed. Vojtisek suffered bruising and cuts on the right side of her face, one above her eye and one below. Johnson got a nosebleed and complained of shoulder pain. She also had bruising from a seat belt. Both women were treated at Wilson Hospital. Officers say Jones speech was slurred, he was unsteady on his feet, and it was evident he was intoxicated. Jones refused a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer. He pled guilty to DWI Tuesday in Binghamton City Court as part of a plea deal and will be back in court for sentencing on June 19th.
