I like Van Gundy...I think he is a hard working guy who is creative at setting up plays\game plans against other teams.... I think he would be fine in POR with LA and a bunch of young guys... I don't see any other candidates out there that are any better...I think he is unfairly getting a bad rap b\c of the Dwight Howard fiasco....that was all brought on by Howard himself....Van Gundy isn't the problem...Howard is...It will be interesting to see if firing the coach\GM will keep Dwight in ORL....probably won't
If true that voted coach players least want to play for, then his problems (probably got that vote because of the way he handled the Dwight Howard situation)becomes the team's problem.
Not going to read any of this thread........... FUCK NO to hiring that dumpy washed up porn star lookin' coach!
Except Van Gundy just dealt with cards he was dealt. A slow as team full of jump shooters. Pack the paint, or toss it outside. It was the best offense for the team to run with the personnel they had. He got them to a Finals with that offense.
I doubt it. I don't think Orlando would prefer Bynum, with all his off-court shenanigans (in a prissy small market) to whatever NJ can offer.
I'd like SVG for a couple of reasons: 1. He's a GREAT interview. After years of listening to Nate-speak, it would be hugely refreshing. 2. He's a great coach. He has had success with very flawed rosters and he his teams always play excellent defense. 3. What he did with Hedo was like what D'Antoni did with Diaw: take a player whose skills were being overshadowed by his flaws elsewhere and put him in a situation where he thrived and helped the team thrive. And I think he could do the same for Batum.
Irrelevant to anything other than aesthetics. He's had MVP-level talent, yet only made one Finals. He also got fired by Pat Riley, who then took that team to a title. His own players say he panics in close games. Hedo had one season with a PER above 17 with SVG, and his game is nothing like Batum's. Spending $5 milion+ on Van Gundy seems foolish to me, which probably means Bert will give it his Clod of approval.
He had one all star level player and a roster full of crap after that... The guy is a good coach....bottom line, he did a good job with what he was given by mgmt... I'd be fine with him coaching this rebuilding project....
I think it's dangerous bringing in a coach that was voted that by the players, to a place that is hard enough to draw big name free agents to. His ffense really isn't a whole lot better than Nate's either, when it comes to the playoffs
