I didn't see any of the prelims (thanks FOX deal--no Fuel TV in Canada), nor the Chiesa/Iaquinta fight, and I've been busy moving, but you're right, I should be saying more. Lawrence/Cofer was raw. Both guys have a ways to go before they can be UFC regulars. Someone with refined striking would be a huge problem for Lawrence at this stage. He might wind up being the biggest talent to come out of season 15 but the UFC will have to find the right fights to build him up with. Speaking of which Holloway showed advanced striking for such a young fighter. I don't know if his ground game is a weakness since Poirier is more than a good featherweight but if not Holloway could be a contender in a few years. Schilling got worked over. Holloway reminds me of Tony Ferguson. Oliveria will be a great addition to the featherweight division. Brookins is a mediocre striker so I don't know how much you can take away from Oliveria's performance on the feet but it seems like he's getting more comfortable. He's had seven fights in the UFC and I don't see any reason not to throw him in there with a top featherweight next time out. Brookins... I dunno. It is indicative of how shallow the TUF talent pool is getting when six of the first eight show winners were champions or title contenders (not even counting Ken-Flo, Koscheck, Stevenson, Maynard, or Cote) but none of the following thirteen. The Ellenberger stoppage looked early to me. Mazz allowed Kampmann to recover but didn't do the same for Ellenberger. The guy has a ton of power but he is wild and had trouble when Kampmann started finding his range. I thought the first round was strange for Ellenberger who rocked Kampmann then laid on him for about four minutes. I think he was trying to pace himself a little too much, or he was just not really comfortable in the cage with him. In any case Kampmann is like the welterweight Stefan Struve--if you don't knock him out in the first minute you're probably going to get beat.
I should add an addendum that I was able to see Perez/Albert on Facebook. Here is the problem we're facing with Kim Winslow: In the Tate/Rousey fight, Rousey just about had Tate's arm ripped off the torso and mounted above her fireplace before Winslow stopped the fight. As you'd expect, Winslow caught a lot of shit for letting it go that far--either she wasn't paying attention or she didn't know enough about what she was seeing, but it was bad. Fast forward to Friday night. Perez has Albert in a deep but maybe not totally locked armbar and Winslow jumps in and stops the fight. Albert, the commentators (especially Anik), and the crowd are perturbed. She says it's a verbal submission because Albert was groaning. He definitely wasn't asking for the fight to be stopped or calling for help. It is within the referee's prerogative to stop the fight if the victim refuses to tap or gives a verbal queue that he/she is suffering but you don't see it happen much. Seems like Winslow didn't want a repeat of Tate/Rousey but how often does that happen? I can think of Cantwell/Al-Hassan... nothing else comes to mind right now. I mean, if Winslow was reffing GSP/Hardy, would she have stopped the fight twice? I think she was affected by her mistake in the Rousey fight and it lead to another mistake in the Perez fight. Crisis of confidence. I would not like to see her again reffing in the UFC for a while.
I think the way Jake fell and how he was holding his face is why Maz stopped the fight. Also, Jake didn't argue it one bit. I think he was in some major trouble and some major pain. Kampmann was right on top of him, too. Arguments could be made both ways. The main event was actually the only fight I saw. I forgot about the event, and I literally remembered and flipped to it right for the opening bell of the 1st round.
