Serious question: Why don't men flush?

I mean it, I'd like to know.

I take the commuter train to work. Downtown stations have no restrooms, but others have one each single stall men's and women's. If your train is in 3 minutes and the "correct" restroom is taken, well, when you've got to go, you've got to go. So it's not unusual for men to use the women's and vice versa.

At least half the time a man uses the women's restroom, he doesn't flush. Go in and confronted with a urine filled toilet, which is rather gross. Sure, I clean cat boxes but that's my responsibility; flushing after grown men is not. And it's not that they are just being inconsiderate to women. When I use the men's room out of necessity, same thing, at least half the time the toilet is unflushed.

It's VERY rare for a woman to not flush; I only recall seeing this once in all my years of using the train.

Is it just a public toilet thing or do men not flush at home as well? What is the deep reason behind so many men not flushing the can?

My totally non political non sports related idle curiosity thread.

(I asked this on Outsports.com and got no good reasons, although one guy suggested I write "men who don't flush are gay" on the wall and at least all the straight dudes will start flushing.)

People don't flush? Gross. It grosses me out when I go to use a restroom, and it's not been flushed. Probably the only time I wouldn't flush is after using a urinal that already has no water in it AND the urinal was extremely nasty (usually only see this at dirty clubs/bars and/or several state parks). Other than that, I would say I always flush. So let's not overgeneralize and lump every guy in the same crowd. You probably wouldn't appreciate it if I lumped every woman or every lesbian in the same group, either.

A couple reasons off the top of my head...

First, I've had housemates who didn't think urine was "that bad." They'd flush a #2, but if it was "just" urine, no big deal, right? We had chats about that.

Second, there are guys (I tended to this when I was a kid) who think that touching anything in a public bathroom is gross. It's MUCH easier to just not flush and leave it for someone else than to get a piece of toilet paper and use it to flush. This may go for the seat issue as well, though that's just speculation on my part--I wouldn't think that anyone with that mindset would LIFT the seat in the first place.

Third, I think that consideration for others in general is something that isn't in vogue today. :dunno:

EDIT: But as BG said above, I don't know that this is an epidemic...I rarely find unflushed toilets/urinals at work or the gym, movie theaters, etc.

I think most guys I know avoid using public restrooms like the plague, unless they know they the bathrooms are extremely clean (or if they're at a bar drinking and can no longer hold it). I would venture to guess that most men that use train station restrooms are uncivilized, same as I would a woman using a men's restroom.

    Another serious question

What the hell are you doing hanging around mens bathrooms to see if they flush or not?

But the bathroom doesn't fit. You're a woman, inquiring about using a men's room.

And if you, and other women are using the men's room, who's to say that it's only men that aren't flushing??

"If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down"

Really though, I think it is becuase some public restrooms are pretty gross and people dont want to touch anything. I don't think flushing is a big deal because I can always hit the lever with my foot. But I'll admit that I wont lift a piss covered seat, though I hope there's no one waiting to use it after me so they don't think that I'm the one who can't aim.

Another theory: It's a men's room. All the men just pee and don't flush, 1, because the public restroom is a dirty place, and 2, because it's Portland and we're trying to conserve water. But every man knows you should flush #2 down, and if you're not afraid to sit on a public toilet seat and let you "hang-down" hang down, then you're probably not afraid to touch the flusher.

    crandc doesn't live in Portland.

Instead of making this out to being about her, why don't we just be honest? Im not saying you are in that group. Bobo had it right. People who don't flush are just lazy.

Because when crandc is involved in posts, it is always more important for her to turn it into how sexist men are. Are you new here?

I use my foot to flush if I'm using a toilet. A lot of guys don't flush a urinal though.

Sidenote: It's annoying that I have to open one or two doors to get out of a bathroom after I just washed my hands. What's the point of washing when you're just going to touch some nasty bathroom door handle?

I made a couple of theories (that came from my perspective), and gave my personal answer with it, too. Dunno what's wrong with that? :dunno:

    But please do tell.

And as I asked before.... If she and other women are using the men's room, how can you just assume it's all men that don't flush? I wouldn't be surprised if there were some women that aren't flushing. It's a legit question, no?

A better question: why is it that when there's a restroom, or restrooms, that are not designated for a particular sex.... And I'm waiting to use the restroom, if a woman walks up, she cuts in front of me and uses the restroom first? Kid you not, it's happened 3-4 times in the past 6-8 weeks.

Laziness and/or improper potty training procedures.

On the gender issue, every woman I've talked to about public restrooms say they have a hard time imagining that men's bathrooms are more disgusting than women's. Apparently some messed up shit goes on in there.

Really? I have to say the men seem to be worse slobs, and that's not just gender bias, it's my observation. True, men don't try to flush sanitary pads down the toilet, but when women pee it goes into the bowl and not on the seat (forgive my being gross).

Honestly, I think people should learn toilet habits from cats.
