http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--b...--mavs--pacers-and-t-wolves--sources-say.html Brandon Roy's top suitors are Bulls, Mavs, Pacers and T'wolves, sources say NEW YORK – As ex-Portland Trail Blazer Brandon Roy plans his comeback to the NBA, the Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers and Minnesota Timberwolves have emerged as serious suitors to sign the former All-Star guard, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Brandon Roy's last game was in a 2011 playoff loss to Dallas. (US Presswire) Roy's recovery from chronic knee problems has been recently spurred by undergoing the platelet rich plasma therapy procedure that Lakers star Kobe Bryant popularized with NBA players, sources said. The blood spinning procedure gave profound relief to the knees of Bryant, Tracy McGrady and baseball star Alex Rodriguez.
For me, assuming that Roy can pass the physical, the question isn't so much "Are you interested?," but what would you risk. Put another way, what sort of player would you forego in order to take a flyer on Roy? Andre Miller? Kirk Hinrich? Jason Kidd? If Roy passes the physical and wants to play here for the vet minimum...no brainer. However, if it will take the MLE or MMLE to get him, he likely becomes the only non-minimum veteran addition you can make this offseason. That takes a little more thought IMO. Personally, I'd need those docs saying really good things about Roy's knees.
Seems to me he'd take the vet minimum, at least until his contract he signed Portland runs out. He makes the same $$$ whether we pay him $1M or $5M. Paying him $5M means Portland has to pay him $5M less, paying him $1M means Portland has to pay him $1M less. At least that's my understanding of how amnesty works.
Right you are, Denny. I believe that his Portland contract was a 5-year max deal that still has 3 years to run. Roy would seem to have no financial incentive to negotiate a contract above the minimum. Makes me wonder why the article said "several teams could be willing to use their full-mid level exception for Roy."
I liked Roy coming out of his draft class but I have to admit you'd need to kick the tires pretty hard before committing to him.
Wats funny is that we drafted Norris Cole, came up pretty big in that one game for the playoffs and was doing well in the rotation before that rookie wall got to him....
