2nd best pick in team history, well that changes everything... If we forget about Terry Porter at 24#, Kersey at #46 and Clifford Robinson at #36. I might be forgetting someone. (edit - I'd also include Walton ahead of Sabonis) I'd put Sabonis about equal with Drazen Petrovic at #60. (edit #2 - & Zach Randolph at #19)
Petrovic barely played for portland. Walton was picked #1, when I think of good draft choices im looking at steals that performed well for portland. I have no issues with someone saying porter
To find the biggest Blazer draft find (including those who played mostly for other teams), click on the Pk column heading in this. http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/POR/draft.html Comparing draft position to career minutes, it was #63 Kevin Gamble, #56 Mickey Johnson, and #53 Anthony Mason. For long-term Blazers it was #46 Jerome Kersey.
I don't think we drafted him. We were assigned him when the ABA ended. His slow style was in total conflict with the upbeat Walton/Ramsey fast break. He was 10% the player Walton was and it really showed in practice.
I think Clyde was overall the best at his pick #14 Importance I think Walton was due to the title Greatest scouting and picks (That is what it is abaout right? scouting)Sabonis, Kersey, Porter and Uncle Cliffy were great picks due to taking a chance on them
Another little experiment. You guys can change the parameters. http://bkref.com/tiny/ueAMq I started at pick #14 to include Drexler.
I think the Porter pick should get additional points since he didn't play PG in college. It still amazes me that a short small-college power forward became the best point guard in franchise history.
