DebateLet me say something, in terms of talent and skill Kobe bryant blows Baylor out of the door. This is my own observation watching baylor. I think he's overrated and is not even in Kobe's league.edit: Oh and no-one can call bias here, there both lakers.
This is a tough comparison because for one Baylor is one of the best players to ever play in the NBA while Kobe IS the best player in the game today. Both Kobe and Elgin are scoring machines, but Kobe gets my vote. Why? Because Kobe is the leader of the team he is on when Elgin was not.The team Baylor was on was lead by Jerry West and later Wilt Chamberlain.Kobe also is a better perimeter scorer and is better at creating his own shots. Not to mention that Kobe is a way better defender than Elgin was.My pick is Kobe.

From what I hear about Baylor, he wasn't a good defender.I know he never won a championship, and Kobe has won 3.They're both great scorers, but Kobe broke some of his records this past season.Kobe is explosive, and a better perimeter shooter like Lakersfan said.Kobe Bryant gets this.
i agree.... kobe by a mile. I have never seen elgin play and i have no doubt that he was good but, in the modern game the amount of excellent athletes makes kobes job alot harder than elgins. And the good word on elgin is he didn't defend all that well.Kobe wins this one by 81 points
This topic is ridiculous and unfair. What do you mean it's not biased. I highly highly doubt anyone on this site has been alive to see Baylor play.

For example, i was born in 1991 and i never got to see Magic johnson play live. Does that mean i have never seen him play? no.All you need to do is watch one game that baylor is featured in and it can be easily figured out this guy isn't even half as talented as kobe. When they have those nba classic marathons, they'll probably show 1969 nba finals game 7. What you do is watch that and please come back to me with your answer on baylor. And what i mean it's not biased is that both these guys play/played for the lakers.
Hmm..tough. I'll go with Baylor. He could score just as well as Kobe, maybe even better, and he was the better rebounder. You could use the championship theory, but Kobe didn't have to go up against the Bill Russell-led Celtics every year..

if you were to phrase the same question in a different way....... if you were picking you own all time team and had to take either KOBE or ELGIN, woh would you choose? - i'd take KOBE!!!!
I'm not sure. When Elgin Baylor scored 71 against the Knicks he had 25 rebounds. and when he scored 61 in the finals, he fouled out before the game ended. My point is, Elgin was simply unstoppable, he would have easily been the greatest scorer in NBA history if not for Wilt Chamberlain. People say Elgin wasn't a good defender but, he was. He didn't suck like some people say. But, Kobe may be a better shooter, and just as good at getting to the basket. I think Kobe has more skills. But Elgin was a complete badass. So ummm. I don't really know. But, I'll pick Kobe.
