...best thing to do would be to let Batum walk if it means $12+ M/year and go hard after UFA Ersan Ilyasova!

If Batum was a Harden type of player I'd be more excited about these figures... He's not, so you don't WAY overpay for an AVERAGE SF/SG..... let him walk...

...kind of, but it definitely rounds out a nice long versatile lineup! [^ added video above to take a look ^]

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

$12 Mil is overpaying for Batum compared to other young swing players.

However, if Hibbert signs the Blazer offer on day one, and the Pacers do not match:

I say match Minny's toxic offer, or work out a sign and trade with them. They have a lot of interesting assets.

Under no circumstance should we let Batum walk.

Getting Hibbert will use up all our cap space, and letting Batum walk only gives us $5mil more in cap space to use. That isn't enough to get us Ilyasova or Lou Williams.

Better to match Batum. If he doesn't live up to his contract the team can trade him in a year or two.

If the team salaries get too high in a couple of years, the team can trade one of their big money players.

What the team can't do, is use this summer's cap space on Hibbert, and then try to replace the production and value of Batum with a small money slot. All we could get for that would be the 3rd tier Free Agent leftovers. There are a LOT of teams with cap space this summer, and any player worth a damn is getting overpaid.

Wow - it would be poetic justice if being cheap with Bayno ended costing us way more on Batum.

Shit, now I know why Jazz fans hate Portland brass so much. It's funny when we do it to them, not so much the other way.

Minny's got to feel good about being a "preferred destination". Shit, if they got Batum and Roy, I might care more about them than the Blazers, at least for a while.

Nic's basically our only exciting player. I mean, I love Aldridge and I'd love to get Hibbert, but they're not what you'd call "exciting". And Lillard is a jumpshooter - woo woo. Don't make me demand 30mpg from Elliot Williams just to keep me awake...

No they don't! Beasley's useless, Derek Williams is Beasley II, Randolph's a headcase, Martell is Martell, Wesley Johnson is reason #1A (along with Johnny Flynn, another "interesting asset" the Wolves had) why everyone thinks Syracuse players suck, and they have DARKO MILICIC. They're not giving up the only assets worth a damn, Rubio, Love and Pekovic. Or are you interested in Barea?

    Here I agree with you.

    True dat.

    Exactly.

...if that's the case, then ask PA to roll the dice one more time and see what happens for that year -or- two. A sign-n-trade is an interesting option as well, do teams still do that? And if so, then who else is interested in Batum and who could we possibly get in return? :dunno:

Minnesota has Webster, now wants Roy and Batum huh? As a Blazer fan that three couldn't get out of the first round of the playoffs..... NEXT!

Batum just doesn't have the kller instinct on a regular basis for this to make any sense!

@blazermb: “@robcee10: @blazermb you worried we're going to lose Batum?” No. I think anything he gets is matched. Just my opinion.

I remember people saying LMA was overpaid, and that the Blazers should have waited until he was a RFA instead of offering him an extension.

Are you guys really fine with paying Batum double what Harden is making? This is a joke!

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Wait a second on my previous post.

I saw a figure of $12.9mil for Hibbert's first year salary. That is lower than I thought, assuming close to correct.

First, at the "low" an amount, I think Indy ends up matching. Though they can't afford it long term, they also can't afford to let talent walk like that. They will have to figure out the finances later.

Second, if the Pacer's owner does pass on matching and we get Hibbert, we would have more cap space than I thought.

The Oregonion tweeted that the Blazer's will have $16.5mil in cap space.

On Blazer's Edge, a poster showed a spreadsheet that claims the Blazers will be able to have $17.3mil in cap space and up to $18.9mil if they use the stretch provision on Shawne Williams.

So, if we get Hibbert, and we have to make a decision on matching a toxic offer to Batum, we will have cap space of:

    $3.6mil to $6mil.

That space could be used before matching Batum to sign another free agent or to sign Freeland or Claver.

If the Blazers do not match Batum's toxic offer, they then would have his cap hold of $5.4mil released, and the total cap space would increase to a range of $9mil to $11.4mil.

That would put the Blazers in the running for lots of players that don't sign on the first day. Ilyasova, Ryan Anderson (R), Lou Williams, and others.

So, would you rather pay Batum $12mil per, or chase after (and most likely "overpay") a different free agent?

To be fair, Harden will get the max next summer.

Yea we should have learned and given Batum the extension he wanted. Now the price is going up up up.

One of the biggest reasons we need Batum for the future of the Blazers is his ability to match up defensively with Kevin Durant. That is if we plan to compete at all the next five years...

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

That's a stupid comparison: Harden is on a rookie contract. That also brings up the issue that Batum has been on a rookie contract for 4 years - and a LOW one at that, because he was picked at 21 (I think) and only fell because of false rumors about heart trouble. So think of a large chunk of his new contract as making up for being underpaid before.

Harden will get the max. Come back then.

That will only be true if we whiff on Hibbert (and any other FA we pursue). If we'd've given Batum the extension, we wouldn't've had cap space.
