It was all in my original post you responded to. Indy can offer a 5th year and bigger annual increases. If Hibbert is wanting a max deal, if I'm Indy and want to keep Hibbert, I want that max deal to be offered by a team that can only offer 4 years and smaller annual increases. If/when Indy matches, they will be paying quite a bit less for Hibbert than if they offered the max they can offer. It's simply more palatable.
All bird free agents are free to resign with their team for up to 5 years. They can only be signed by a new team or in a sign and trade for 4 years. This includes restricted free agents such as George Hill and Roy Hibbert. There is a designated player rookie extension which can be for a 5th year and up to 30% of the cap. Other rookie extensions can only be 4 additional years for up to 25% of the cap. A team can only give one player the designated extension and have one more acquired via trade on their roster. A 5 year contract that a teams own free agent signs does not make them a designated player.
They will have three days.... but not until July 11th. That's the first day the offer can be officially signed.
I don't understand the benefit for Indy on this deal, unless we are sending them a pick/player or both. His contract would come off the book regardless. Unless they are far enough over the cap to make a difference. If they have 12 mil free after the offer; then it's no point, IMO. If they get a player option and are close to going over cap, then I would see how that would make sense.
Ahhh okay, been away for a while. So on July 11th is when all the proposed "restricted free-agent" signings can take place? Interesting!
No, July 11th is when all signings can take place. That is the first day that deals can be officially signed.
These are both extended rookie deals, which I believe would mean only one could be the designated player,a nd get a 5th year.
No these are not rookie extensions. Rookie extensions are signed before the last season of a rookie contract. Neither Hill nor Hibbert can become a designated player. Plus neither fulfilled the all-star starter, all-nba, or MVP criteria anyways.
From a Pacers beat writer... Kurt Helin: George Hill agrees to five-year deal to stay with Pacers http://dlvr.it/1p0lzb #PBT #NBA about 6 minutes ago "The biggest question for the Pacers now is Roy Hibbert — he is expected to sign a max offer sheet from the Portland Trail Blazers on July 11 (the first day you can sign a free agent). The Pacers will then have three days to match the offer or let him go. I really don’t see how they do not match. Hibbert is central to making the Pacers a contender."
According to Jaynes, there will be no offer to match because of Batum's offer sheet. Oh wait, he was wrong on that one, too.
But Indy could simply offer less to begin with. They don't need another team involved to do that. They don't have to offer him a max contract just because he wants one. barfo
John Canzano: Blazers will have $3 million in cap space to use on a free agent while waiting for Hibbert and Batum to settle. I expect Pacers match. 4 minutes ago
Ben Golliver: Ford: 51% Chance That Pacers Match Blazers Offer To Roy Hibbert http://sbn.to/M0Vb08 2 minutes ago Chad Ford of ESPN.com writes in a chat that the Indiana Pacers are not sure whether or not to match a 4-year, $58 million offer sheet reportedly made by the Portland Trail Blazers to restricted free agent center Roy Hibbert. ------------------------------ 51%. They are really on the fence. If they can find a replacement that they are comfortable with for cheaper, they may let him go. Chris Kaman is coming in today into Indy. Personally I feel that's a pretty big downgrade, but Larry Bird has been a huge fan of Kaman's.
Where have you been? The Blazers already are the "other team", if reports are true that we have come to verbal terms with Hibbert. What you are talking about has already happened.
