no, we could've "designated' Batum before the season started. All a "designated" player gets is a 5yr, Max entension. For most players coming off their rookie contract it will be capped at the 25% max. But you can "designate" a "Derrick Rose player" to give him a 5yr extension at the 30% max.

For instance, this offseason the Clippers could designate Griffin. He'd get a 5-year extension on the 1 year left of his deal, so it's in effect signing a 6yr contract. If he makes another all-NBA or starts the all-star game, when the extension starts he'll get the 30%. If not, he'll get 25%.

    two completely different things

designated player rookie scale 30% max player (aka d rose provision)

a d rose provision player doesnt even need to sign 5 years

Correct, but it has to be at least 4 for a rose player.

Has anyone taken the time to really look at Indiana's cap situation? I know they had a ton of cap room, but I wonder how it's looking. They've signed George Hill (who earlier turned down 6M a year) and drafted a first rounder. They are talking to Courtney Lee, Jamal Crawford, Chris Kaman, and maybe more. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if they can fill out their roster, match Hibbert, and stay under the cap?

^That's just it...... they don't have to stay under the cap to sign Hibbert. Just like us and Nic FAMS!

True...but Indiana's owner hasn't been one to spend wildly before. I know he reportedly OK'd spending the money to match Hibbert if they decide it's the best decision, but I doubt he's planning on going over the cap to do so. So, I'm guessing they are weighing their options and deciding if matching Hibbert or signing a number of players is smarter. Knowing their cap situation would be interesting & give us a better idea of the details of their internal debate are.

From what I've read, all of their medium-to-bigger contracts except one expires after this next year, and whichever large contract remains, it expires after the following season (except George Hill, that is). It sounds like they have pretty solid cap flexibility, overall. I don't think it's going to come down to the owner's ability to affort Hibbert around the cap. It sounds more like they are debating whether or not he's worth that size of contract.

New Pres and GM have both been known to spend to keep their guys though

And they just gave Hill a pretty big deal. I like Hill, but not THAT much. If they're willing to spend what they did on Hill, I can't imagine they're not willing to match our offer.

Until the Pacers decline to match it's probably best to just assume they will. All-star centers don't often get away in restricted free agency regardless of how cheap their owner is (excepting of course the Clippers).

That's what I've already done. I'm assuming we're going into the season with the roster as is, plus Batum, and some scrubs or dead vets.

I see us panicking and signing Kaman and overpaying to keep Batum

lets hope not, I'd offer kaman a cheap contract, like 2 yrs at 12-13 mil, a Hawes type deal, or we go "C" by committe and pick up some cheap guys like mahimi and/or A Randolph and hopefully Freeland comes over

Even with the meds, I am getting a strong feeling that this off season is going to be a fail or epic proportions. The money we have is pretty much use it now or lose it. Batum and or his agent want nothing to do with Portland. The free agent we targeting is restricted, and "owned" by a GM we happened to fire on draft night. Other free agents out there, that might have been good fits have all agreed elsewhere. I like Damian Lillard, and think he will be a good NBA PG, but our two lottery picks were anything but sure things (Weber State and a fucking white center). Still no coach. Our roster right now is

    Aldridge
    Thomas
    E. Williams
    S. Williams
    Smith
    Matthews
    Babbitt

Because Joel and Sabonis were total garbage? Relax.

You also leave out Freeland, Clavier and Will Barton as strong roster possibilities.

Sabonis was Euro, so he doesn't count.

Joel sucks. Sorry Blazer fans, but he does. Joel's career averages of 4/6/1.4 blks 12.1 PER are awful. Kwame freaking Brown, regarded as one of the biggest busts in the NBA has career averages of 7/6/.6 blks 12.6 PER

Oh ya, those are all possibilities. I was simply going on actual players on the roster right now.
