I see where CT is coming from. If Minny wanted to force Blazers hand they offer and have Batum sign as soon as possible. With Hibbard off the table, matching would kill Blazers cap situation meaning less likely to match. In fact consensus here (which often follows suit) is Blazers don't match.

Either Blazers and Minny are in serious S&T mode, or Minny is backing down some.

I have a question in to Coon right now about the actual timing of when waived salaries come off the books--if it's immediately, when claimed, after 7 days, etc.

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

I don't think it's that complicated. MIN doesn't want to use up their amnesty (even if they didn't care about keeping Darko) for nothing. Right now, Webster and Miller still have trade value as people who can immediately slice 10M or so in salary off a team's cap. MIN doesn't want to lose those assets on the chance the Blazers match and they end up with no Batum, no Darko, no more amnesty, no ability to trade Webster/Miller...

Since MIN can't read Olshey right now (or they can, and they know they'll get matched), then it makes sense for them to not offer and see what we'll accept in an S&T.

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

why does signing Nic kill out cap situation? Batum's cap hold was like 5.5 mil, we had cap room of 16 mil or so, therefore even if he signed for 11 mil per and we match we'd still have over 10 mil in capspace, so what the heck?

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

Right now, we have LMA, Wes, E-Will, Babbitt, Thomas, Nolan under contract for 26.558M in cap hit.
we also have holds for S. Williams stretch provision waiver, Lillard, Leonard, Claver and Freeland for 7.268M in cap hit, for 33.826M for 10 players.
Batum is a cap hold of 5.388M, and there is a roster spot hit of 488k or so (rookie min)
Regardless of what Batum does, we have ~24M in cap space. If he signs for 11M starting salary, we'd have ~13M in cap space, or roughly a max (max is 13.668M for 6th-year player and below)

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

yes but frankly who is left in FA that we'd even consider doing that? especially after we did not get Hibbert, we could always trade Wes down the road for more capspace if necessary

I have faith in Olshey (why I don't know, it's just a hunch) holding strong in negotiations; Minnesota will have to overpay in a S and T or Batum will end up back in Portland. I really think we are in the better negotiating position; they want him really bad and it wouldn't be a terrible thing for Portland to have to overpay some to keep him.

IMO the longer this goes on the more Kahn gets squeezed to either give up more in a sign and trade or just move on and not even make Nic an offer. So far I think Olshey has handled this very nicely

The only wrinkle would be Nicolas taking the QO, playing out the season and going into unrestricted free agency ... his agent seems emotional enough that I would't take this off the table.

If we don't match, the Blazers will the Blazers even make the team minimum salary? Meyers Leonard might just get a big fat bonus check!

we don't have to meet the team minimum until the last day of the year. We can keep the space open for trades, amnestied guys, etc.
