I don't understand, why would his Bird rights be a concern if he does not plan on staying with Portland? A sign and trade next July? That works OK for the Blazers too.

Even if Nic signs the QO, Minny is unlikely to have the cap space next year to sign him to a 12 Mil contract. Besides, can't we just trade him at the deadline to NO or somebody?

Yep. If Minny can't get us to trade them Batum, they aren't going to do nothing and risk making Kevin Love agitated with inactivity. They will turn their attention elsewhere and tie up their cap space with other players.

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

even if he takes the QO, and doesn't get traded (which is a worst case scenario for pdx and for Batum),
    1) it's likely he doesn't get an $11 mil/year offer sheet (Kahn is just F-ing with us this year, won't have $ next year)
    2) all his agent really cares about is $, and I think Portland can offer a longer contract - point is his agent will want him to re-sign with us.

i think it bodes well if he is unrestricted, unless the blood is really as bad as it is being made out to be

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

As opposed to what? The crap Minnesota might offer us today? I am also looking at the QO as the worst case scenario for everyone. Not a great scenario but that does not mean we may not get anything in return. There would still be a lot of variables throughout the season that could play in to it. But as we all have mentioned it is in no one's best interest for it to come down to this.

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

the chances are much greater we would receive a better offer in a sign and trade NEXT offseason than they are of batum waiving his bird rights and then us trading him as a rental somewhere if he signs the QO

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

WoW puts Nic's value at $11.18 mil/year but even that would be a steal because Nate artificially lowered Batum's minutes, and that value is at current minutes played.

I wish Nic didn't hate Portland because I'd feel good matching up to $12mil.

I just don't see it. At 11.5 or 12 million he's damn near a max player and Nic hasn't played anywhere near max level. Stats don't mean shit if they don't translate into wins. We are at a very pivotal point and handing a near-max deal to a role player is the kind of move that can cripple the team for years. I don't think it's a good decision. It would have been one thing if we had signed Hibbert and were already over the cap regardless, but right now we have a bunch of rookies coming in and Aldridge is our only established star. Giving Batum that much money is not a good decision.

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

I seem to be in the minority, but I also believe he is worth up to $12 mill. If Minny offers anything up to that, I think there is a 100% chance Olshey/Allen match. Which would mean Minny wouldn't get him, period. Minny is going to have to pony up Williams and a draft pick, or fuggetaboutit.

It seems like Batum's agent really boxed himself into a corner by only considering one team other than the Blazers. Also, I don't know how much if his public vitriol is real but I suspect that's just how he thinks he's supposed to negotiate. Dumb.

Anybody know the terms of Darko's remaining contract? Is it more than one year? At the right price (i.e. after amnesty) he might be a good choice to not hinder Leonards development. ;)

    Good job Minnesota.

    Re: Minnesota: full of shit?

that is the crux of the issue

yes he is worth 11 million per but, is it a good decision to spend that on him?

like a poor family, yes steak is worth what it costs, but is it a better decision to buy a case of tap ramen instead?

I don't know Jerry Zgoda, but the mutual circle-jerk he's having with Jaynes about how POR fans are idiots that they have to straighten out is pissing me off. Especially when I've been one that's had to straighten Jaynes out.
