The specifics of the contract have yet to be released, but early reports are that it's a two year contract, with a player option in the second year, so if Mayo doesn't prove to be a good fit this season, he can re-enter free agency next offseason.

The Mavericks also only have roughly $4 mill in cap left, so unless the player option is an obscenely (and unlikely) large value, it looks like Mayo took a lot less than what he could have potentially gotten.

This is an interesting signing that you can look at from a few angles.

First of all, you have to wonder why Mayo's agent couldn't get more money (the official contract has yet to be released, but it can be assumed given the Mav's cap situation that he could have received more). Personally, I wouldn't pay Mayo more than a mill or two to be a bit player off my bench, but if I were his agent, I'd imagine I could get far more than market value for a player who "has All-Star potential" in a weak free agent market. Mayo's agent must be a real "winner."

Second of all, you have to wonder if Mayo can actually deliver in Dallas. Maybe a change of scenery is what he needed. That history has yet to be written, but from what I saw from Mayo in Memphis, he needs a lot of minutes and a lot of touches to be effective. I've always thought that most players in the NBA, given the same opportunities, could yield the same results. After all, Mayo is a mediocre shooter, below average ball handler, and mediocre athlete at best. He's been one non-stop hype machine since he was in the 8th grade. With that said, this is his second chance, and given Dallas' desperation to win, you have to wonder if this could wind up being a year of statistical career highs for Mayo.

Third of all, this has all the writings of a last ditch effort from Cuban and the Mav's brass to have one last outside chance at the Finals, as well as the Kaman and Brand signings. Next year's free agency seems way more promising for a team like Dallas, but Dirk's window is closing, and therefore, so is Dallas'. I guess it's now or never for the Mav's.

It'd be sort of reminiscent of teams they dragged out in the mid-00's with Walker, Stackhouse, Finley, and Jamison, except now Nowitzki is on his decline as well.

Good signing. With the right attitude, Mayo can be a great player. The Mavs have definitely picked themselves up from what looked liked a disaster of a offseason. Kinda wish Kidd opted to stay in Dallas. The Knicks are a headache.

The mavs are picking up alot of random B+ players, its not the Williams or Dwight Howard that they planned! I was hoping they would pick someone bigger up! but Mayo is a decent addition to the squad
