The GF and I are going to Reno for a few days. Neither of us have been before. Got a couple of deals on different places to stay.

What's downtown Reno like? Is it fun? Kinda like downtown Vegas? Should we stay there or out by Lake Tahoe?

Also we're driving from Portland. What's the best way to go? I-5 to Oak Ridge/Klamath Falls or take I-5 all the way down to Cali and cut over at Hwy 89?

    Thx!

Best drive is hwy26 to hwy 97 and right through Beautiful Central Oregon, take a left on hwy 31 a mile south of La Pine, stop off at Summer Lake Hot Springs for a soak, down through Lakeview.

Reno is no Vegas but it has real casinos, not that fake Indian crap. Carson City/Tahoe's a nice base to stay at.

Virginia City and Boot Hill is a great day trip.

I have only been when my team competed in the National Bowling Tournament. It's been several years, but Kicks was fun. They have a cool driving range at some hotel. Sorry, I have failed you

I've been there twice. Not impressed. Kinda dingy. The casino hotel was a complete dump. But I'm sure there are lots of good things about Reno.

I have heard there are some good Basque restaurants in Reno.

I've been to Lake Tahoe and Virginia City and would recommend those places too (depends on what you want to do).

I'd be interested in this but now that Maris knows what my plans are he'll probably run down there and shoot the pimps.

Why spend the money when he can drive to NE Portland for Mrs HCP?

Going to a funeral in Klamath Falls, thought I'd go a little further south afterwards to Reno.

Been to Lake Tahoe many times.

I've never gone just for Reno, so I could see it being disappointing if wanting a Vegas experience (the nightlife is not the same). Having said that, if you are looking to spend some time playing in the sun and gambling at night, I love Reno/Tahoe area.

Can't remember which routes I take down when I drive. Depends on if you are going to power through the drive or take in some sites. Crater lake is a good stop on the trip . . .

My first favorite TV show as a kid was Bonanza. The theme song also sparked my interest in playing the guitar. As a young adult I ended up studying guitar and music from Howard Roberts, the 60's-70's King of studio guitar players who it turned out played the Bonanza theme along with just about every other TV theme song back then (Twilight Zone, Gilligans Island, The Munsters...).

So about 6 years ago we bought a travel trailer and decided to go visit Lake Tahoe, Virginia City and Reno since we'd never been there. I was so fucking excited I was going to be able to go see The Ponderosa, which had been an attraction there ever since Bonanza stopped filming.

To my dismay, some selfish asshole had bought it about 2 weeks prior to our arrival and shut it down to the public. :sigh:

    Went to Reno once.

    Went w my girlfriend.

It was the Fourth of July.

We went to nightclubbing and then we went to the casino. We got drunk and we got very lucky playing blackjack.

My luck ran out when we stopped at a place called the chapel of love.

    Stay away from that place.

I live in Sacramento (about 90 min way). I'm not sure what is bringing you to Reno but if it is just for a get away and not a specific event, I'd go to Tahoe instead. Reno is pretty white trash, at least that is how it is in the strip by the casinos. Not much to do except gamble. It is nothing like Vegas. You can't just walk down the strip and have a good time like vegas. On busy weekends, there is a HUGE biker population that goes there and those guys are no fun to be around when they are all drinking and take over the town. There were a few shootings on the strip and in the casinos recently when 2 biker gangs got into it and just started shooting all over the place. Not many clubs, though that's not really my scene anyway. Not great food. Like someone else mentioned, carson city and the bonanza set were kind of cool but I wouldn't go there just for that.

Tahoe is much cleaner with much more to do than just gamble. You can easily rent a boat to take out on the lake. Emerald bay is beautiful and there is great hiking/ bike riding all over. I'd recommend hiking through desolation wilderness. It is about 20-30 min from the casinos. It has cool, easy trails with lots of waterfalls and a great view down to the bay. Harrah's has a sportsbook better than anywhere in Tahoe and Reno (could be Harvey's, they are righ next to each other and a tunnell connects them). The casino's in both reno and tahoe are kind of quiet now, indian casinos have really cut into their market. Tahoe, at least to me, has a more nature/stoner vibe whereas Reno has more of a meth vibe.

Last time I was in Reno I stayed at Silver Legacy and it was OK. I think it was probably the best place there for me but I won't be sad if I never go back. In Tahoe, don't stay at MontBlue. It used to be Caesars, then they changed the name, sign and lobby but left all the roman crap all over the rooms and halls and it is way overpriced. I like staying at the Horizon. It's decent enough and you can often find deals for 79/night. If you don't mind a little walk or cab ride to the casinos, you may want to check out renting a cabin or getting one of the hotels on the California side. I think it is Embassy suites- but if you're interested I can double check the name of the hotel- that is on a private beach with great views of the lake, really clean and nice and probably 1/2 mile from casinos. There are lots of cabins walking distance from the casinos. Last time I went, we rented a huge house in a gated community with a private beach. It was a little expensive but we split it with 4 other couples/kids. It was something like 2000/week for all of us. It was awesome. about 1/4 mile from casinos. The beach was great becuase it gets crowded in the summer but there was no one anywhere near us, we actually left our kayaks on the beach for a week and they were fine. Again, I can find the name of the community if you're interested.
