Demetrious Mighty Mouse Johnson defeated Joe Benavidez this past weekend to claim the promotion's inaugural flyweight (125lbs.) strap. The title bout was the culmination of a flyweight tournament featuring four fighters that required a rematch between Johnson and Ian McCall. The UFC currently has just 14 fighters in the division, although seven of the top ten ranked flyweights are with the UFC. The bantamweight division has 39 fighters, featherweight 58, and lightweight 66 (all estimates). The next contender seems to be Chris Cariaso, who has won his last three fights and is currently awaiting an opponent. TUF winner John Dodson faces Jussier da Silva next month in another possible title eliminator. Recent losers Benavidez and McCall are also in the mix. After that the division is unclear and requires several months to shake-out. Can you have a division with barely a dozen fighters and a handful of guys even close to the title picture? Isn't this the stated reason by White as to why there aren't women fighting in the UFC? Gotta think there are at least 14 good 135-lbs. women out there if that is all it takes.
