Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! bill on Gov. Mitt Romney's desk would make basketball the official state sport, despite strong opposition by Boston Red Sox fans. "We had to work on a few people," said Rep. Patricia A. Walrath, D-Stow, a co-sponsor of the bill passed late Monday night before the Legislature adjourned for the year. Romney -- a season ticket-holder at Fenway Park -- said Wednesday he wasn't sure when he'd sign the measure. "I'm sure it will dribble out at some point," Romney said. Most basketball historians agree that the game was invented by James A. Naismith in 1891 in Springfield. Fourth-grade students at the Joseph P. Mulready School in Hudson came up with the idea to give the game a special designation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------YES! Basketball rules everything around me...our ballas ballas kill yall's
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! wow, this is weird. I didn't even know states had official sports. haha

I'm pretty suprised since people are Red Sox crazy out there but it does make some sense since it was invented in Massachusetts and The Celtics were one of the greatest dynastys any sport has ever seen
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! "Hey, I know. Instead of actually working, let's waste taxpayer dollars and do something fun and useless! It would be really cool!"
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! With all that is going on in Boston right now, aka tunnells falling apart and killing people....and people that are responsible for it sit back and count there money....this basketball bill was really important

Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>A ceiling panel fell from the Big Dig Tunnel onto a motorcyclist, killing him.</div>It was actually a regular passenger car and the passenger was killed but the driver survived. Still, someone died because the state hired absolute morrons to run the big dig.
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! Interesting...well only 49 states left until basketball takes over the country.

Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! This is really interesting. Did you know that Quilted Northern is the official toilet paper of my anus?
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! I know the fact that this whol bill thing is stupid but I have an interesting update on this topic, I was listening to talk radio today and they were debating whether or not basketball should be the actual sport of massachusetts. I was astounded on how many people were calling in sounding like Boston yahoo's saying that it was a shame they voted on this. They said that the Red Sox were 10X more popular than the Celtics and other stupid comments like that. They never once spoke of how James Naismith created the sport of basketball in massachusetts, how the basketball hall of fame is in massachusetts, or the fact that the Boston Celtics have won 16 championships.
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! I think it's just hard for them to put it in perspective since the Red Sox and Patriots have been very successful as of late. I was thinking about this earlier, and football is clearly the sport of Texas. At the same time, I could see a lot of people arguing for basketball or even baseball.
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! Blah, its good for basketball....but i don't think that the people living in boston will approve. But it does make sense since it was created there.
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! well it was created in springfield, ma at a YMCA but that's beside the pointi dont think this was based on the team's popularity..i think they took into account the amount of people across the state who play basketball too...i can for a fact tell you it's a lot
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>but i don't think that the people living in boston will approve</div>That's both true and sad at the same time. There a TON of people in Boston who don't know what the hell they are talking about. The city has a history of fans riding the fence when it comes to their professional sports teams. Bird was boo'ed at times for not scoring a lot of points or just simply having a bad game when the Celtics were a first place, championship quality team. If Paul Pierce was scoring 40 points a game and the Celtics had a nasty record everyone would be applauding this bill.
Re: Basketball is Now the Official Sport of Massachusetts! True..there arent as many young basketball fans as there used to be because of the amount of success the team hasnt had but like Larry Bird said"the fans here know basketball"i dont think it should be an investment of the state though...more of an unofficial label would be better
