From what I've read, it's not the wind speed that's making things tough. It's a combination of the large size of the storm (meaning lots of square miles that are pushing a lot of water towards land), very high tides, a cold front that's moving down from Canada and a snow storm that's coming in from the west. Edit: this article seems pretty decent in explaining the storm: http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/29/14779057-how-sandy-turned-into-a-superstorm?lite
Ya, it's a storm. Not a big deal. If they tell you to leave, leave. If not, hunker down with water and deal with it.
Seems like it's a pretty big deal to me -- some of those pictures from NJ look bad. Lives will be lost.
Kind of a big deal. -Stock market closed due to weather for first time in over 25 years -Multiple states declare state of emergency -Governors acknowledging that deaths are probable This is a big deal on the east coast.
Deaths because people won't leave Not nearly as devastating as Katrina Probably the same as slow moving storm Alyson
Yes Katrina was a big deal. But so is Sandy. -wall street closed down again tomorrow -NY just called in the national guards -More than 765,000 in seven states have no electricity, with New York and New Jersey being the most affected states with more than 220,000 outages each.
I just hopped on to post the same photo. And people in another thread wonder if these people deserve admiration? Breathtaking.
Half the people in the company I work for are in D.C. It is being hit really hard. Pouring rain and 60 MPG wind gusts. They closed the office today and tomorrow.
Is it somehow important to pretend to guard the unknown soldier's bones during a hurricane? I guess it is impressive that they are doing their job, but their job today is really pretty stupid. barfo
I agree. I know it won't come across politically correct enough to many, and get yelled at for it, but seems to me there's a line somewhere between honorable and foolishness. Risking your lives for our country.Admirable. Guarding that tomb in a terrible storm?
My understanding is that the post is one of highest honor. And that the photos we're seeing today were taken in September.
