If you took everyone off of welfare today, then offer it back to them under the condition that they had to work for it. I wonder what percentage of them would agree to it? You know if they need welfare benefits to survive, they'll agree to just about anything. Most of the ones screwing the system would probably be scared away.
If they worked they wouldn't be homeless! http://www.opb.org/news/article/mor...end-oregon-schools/?google_editors_picks=true
Yes they should be put to work. Along with shortened timelines for how long they can stay on the service. It isn't communism because they can opt out.
I think in theory its a good idea but in practice it would be a collosal cluster fuck. People dont work hard if they is no direct benifit or incentive to keep working hard. The hardest working people in this scenario would be the ones in charge trying to keep everyone on task. Also people don't really get what unemployment benifits really are. It is revolution insurance, when people cant work, feed their familys or buy basic necessaties they get pissed off, form groups and start doing uncivil shit. If you keep their bellys full they dont have much motivation for uncivil type shit.
If we could just take the bottom 10% of the population, the mentally ill, the disabled, and the eldery, and get rid of them all . . .this country would be in a lot better financial situation.
You make good points, but there's no incentive to get off welfare at all. I figure if a person does get a job, he (or she) might actually start to care enough to want a bigger pay check.
Communism is exactly the word for it. But there is another angle like Denny was talking about. Maybe a better screening system while we're at it. But if the lazy has a way to fuck the system, they will fuck the system.
I agree but not everyone is motivated by an "honest days wage", I know plenty of people who put more effort into not working than they would if they worked, I also know a lot of lazy mofo's who dont put effort into anything. There will always be people who take advantage of the system, finding the right way mitiage them is is the key. Make it uncomfortable to be on benifits within reason, Im all in favor of drug testing for benifits. Maybe extra benifits for a work co op program? Make them do 100 jumping jacks for every $50 of food stamps? *dunno*
So if they don't work hard, put them on a road crew where they can pick up trash and keep our highways nice and tidy.
I don't think this will install a work ethic in anyone, I think people will find it degrading and demeaning. Save this stuff for prison patrol and community service. I would like to see something more community driven and uplifting. A couple ideas off the top of my head. Some way to earn community college or trade school credits, or some type of skill workshop (not the bullshit ones they already have). Set up a community garden/farm where the workers can keep some of the harvest and the shelters get the rest.
If we did this, tens of millions of people would have sudden Fibromyalgia- the phantom "I hurt and no longer want to work" syndrome. Then they'd just switch to receiving SSI.
no more demeaning than every other job i mean even 10 hours a week, if you dont want to work 10 hours a week for your free rent and food, find a job. they can work from home on the phone even.
