Georges St-Pierre's head trainer Firas Zahabi spoke with Ariel Helwani today on The MMA Hour and outlined his concerns over a St-Pierre/Anderson Silva super-fight, most notably saying that a catch-weight bout would be advantageous to Silva who could cut more weight than normal and bounce back up to over 200-lbs. whereas St-Pierre would only be ten pounds heavier than normal come fight time, or in the 190-195-lbs. range. St-Pierre has been cutting less weight as his career progresses in order to increase his longevity. Zahabi says that if Silva is willing to get down to welterweight that it would be a fair fight. Silva has in fact said in the past that he could make 170-lbs. for this fight but it is extremely unlikely that at 37 or 38-years old the UFC Middleweight Champion would risk the cut. Silva hasn't fought below middleweight for about a decade. GSP was offered the opportunity to set the fight in motion early Sunday morning following his win over Carlos Condit but avoided answering the question definitively, then berated media at the post fight presser for overshadowing the title fight with constant speculation regarding Silva.
I would absolutely love to see them fight but if Georges isn't into it I don't fault him. The real issue seems to be a lack of competition for Silva. There is a hell of a lot of competition in the welterweight shark tank but not much to speak of at 185-lbs.
Dana White chimed in saying that if the fight were to take place at 170-lbs. it would be a non-title affair; if Silva won he would be unlikely to defend it.
