    History of Tel Aviv.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tel_Aviv

In 1906, a group of Jews, among them residents of Jaffa, followed the initiative of Akiva Arye Weiss and banded together to form the Ahuzat Bayit (lit. "homestead") society. The society's goal was to form a "Hebrew urban centre in a healthy environment, planned according to the rules of aesthetics and modern hygiene."[8] The urban planning for the new city was influenced by the Garden city movement.[36] The first 60 plots were purchased in Kerem Djebali near Jaffa by Jacobus Kann, a Dutch citizen, who registered them in his name to circumvent the Turkish prohibition on Jewish land acquisition.[37] Meir Dizengoff, later Tel Aviv's first mayor, also joined the Ahuzat Bayit society.[38][39] His vision for Tel Aviv involved peaceful co-existence with the Arabs.[8]

By 1914, Tel Aviv had grown to more than 1 square kilometre (247 acres).[36] However, growth halted in 1917 when the Ottoman authorities expelled the Jews of Jaffa and Tel Aviv.[36] A report published in The New York Times by United States Consul Garrels in Alexandria, Egypt described the Jaffa deportation of early April 1917. The orders of evacuation were aimed chiefly at the Jewish population.[43] Jews were free to return to their homes in Tel Aviv at the end of the following year when, with the end of World War I and the defeat of the Ottomans, the British took control of Palestine.

I would love to see Egypt, and especially its new government, become a major player and good actor. It seems that they may be able to help forge a truce, which would be a great thing. It would really rock if they could broker an outright peace accord so the two state solution can be implemented and people can get on with their lives in peace.

you mean like Sadat did with the Camp David Accords in 1979, where Arafat said "let them sign whatever they want, we're not stopping" or words to that effect, and then Sadat was assassinated 2 years later? How can Egypt broker peace when they've entered the DMZ (earlier this summer) and stationed anti-air batteries in the Sinai? The Muslim Brotherhood is still a powerful political party there...

Morsi is a leading figure in the Muslim Brotherhood. It would be awesome, like I said, for him to lead and show a moderation in the religious part and emphasize the good governing part.

Good quote I found somewhere: "When a Palestinian child is killed in the conflict Israel mourns, when an Israeli child is killed by a Hamas rocket, Palestinians rejoice."

This makes no sense. Clinton made this happen.

    http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/162433#.ULAFAKXjAQJ

Abbas recently announced that the PA will present its bid for non-state UN membership on November 29. That date was chosen on purpose, as it is the anniversary of the day in 1947 in which the United Nations voted in favor of the partition plan. The resolution recommended the creation of two states, one Arab, one Jewish and granted a small portion of the area, under the British Mandate, to the new Jewish state.

U.S. President Barack Obama has announced that he opposes the PA bid and asked Abbas not to go through with it. However, Abbas responded to Obama with a direct “no”.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has told its ambassadors to explain that the PA’s plan to ask for UN recognition is a violation of the Oslo Accords and may cause Israel to officially announce that it is “canceling them partially or completely.”

The agreement commits the PA to negotiate with Israel for the establishment of an independent PA entity.

It's a world gone mad. What Israel is asked to accept would be unacceptable to any other country on earth. Make Gaza part of Egypt and the West Bank part of Jordan. Of course, neither country wants anything to do with those places, but they do love that they make mischief and cause grief to Israel. The Palestinians are the Useful Idiots of the Middle East.

If they wish to have their own country, recognizing Israel's right to exist as a precondition shouldn't be onerous.

LETTER FROM YASSER ARAFAT TO PRIME MINISTER RABIN:

    September 9, 1993
    Yitzhak Rabin

    Prime Minister of Israel

    Mr. Prime Minister,

The signing of the Declaration of Principles marks a new era in the history of the Middle East. In firm conviction thereof, I would like to confirm the following PLO commitments:

The PLO recognizes the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and security.

The PLO accepts United Nations Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338.

The PLO commits itself to the Middle East peace process, and to a peaceful resolution of the conflict between the two sides and declares that all outstanding issues relating to permanent status will be resolved through negotiations.

The PLO considers that the signing of the Declaration of Principles constitutes a historic event, inaugurating a new epoch of peaceful coexistence, free from violence and all other acts which endanger peace and stability. Accordingly, the PLO renounces the use of terrorism and other acts of violence and will assume responsibility over all PLO elements and personnel in order to assure their compliance, prevent violations and discipline violators

In view of the promise of a new era and the signing of the Declaration of Principles and based on Palestinian acceptance of Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338, the PLO affirms that those articles of the Palestinian Covenant which deny Israel's right to exist, and the provisions of the Covenant which are inconsistent with the commitments of this letter are now inoperative and no longer valid.
Consequently, the PLO undertakes to submit to the Palestinian National Council for formal approval the necessary changes in regard to the Palestinian Covenant.

    Sincerely,
    Yasser Arafat

    Chairman

    The Palestine Liberation Organization

Sweet. Please explain Oslo. Bottom line, if the Palestinians truly wanted their own country, they could have one by now. But as has been said, the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

Well, yeah. They wanted more than Israel offered and the deal was scuttled in the end.

If (IMO) the Palestinians were smart, they'd focus on building cities and infrastructure, while staying away from violence. I'm sure the people don't want the violence. I'm sure the world would pitch in and help them build. And I'm sure that Israel wouldn't attack if not provoked.

Don't you hate it when you get 97% of what you want in a negotiation? Those poor Palestinians. They'll never get as good of a deal as they did in Oslo. And given the policies they've pursued, I'll never shed a tear for those nihilistic people.

You have to realize the level of hate involved. When the Israelies left the area, instead of occuping the homes, businesses, and farms. They burned them. To them they were unclean. There is the rare combination of race, religion and decades of fighting.
