I saw Skyfall last night. I'd give it an 8/10. Probably the best bond film I've seen in decades. Next on my list will either be Argo or Red Dawn.
I saw two movies over the weekend. "Flight" with my girlfriend. We planned to see "Life of Pi", but it was sold out. Not a bad movie. Denzel is Denzel. Then I saw "Silent Hill: Redemption" with my son (his choice obviously). It as quite easily the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire 51-year life. I could have predicted that when my son told me it as the sequel to a movie based on a video game (that's two strikes right there). Here's what Rotten Tomatos says about it: "Featuring weak characters, an incomprehensible plot, and a decided shortage of scares, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is a mediocre effort even by the standards of video game adaptations." Tomatometer Rating = 6% (which is actually better than Joel Freeland's FG%) They are being way too kind. It was the dumbest, least scary, least suspenseful movie I've ever seen. Nothing, I mean NOTHING that happened made any sense at all. Random nameless characters were introduced for the sole purpose of being killed off within minutes. Scared girl in mannequin factory? Yep, she'll be dead within 5 minutes. No surprise there. It was so incomprehensible that characters would periodically break into monologues to TRY to explain what as going on. They couldn't. After 12 minutes, I began to wish it really was a video game so someone would kill the main character and the game, errrr, movie would be over. BNM
The ending was bogus, but I'm not sure how else they could've ended it. And why didn't the reporter end up with his old girlfriend? Also: how DID her mom die? Was she shot? Run over? Was that just a story?
i just watched clay pigeons for the first time in a long while, good flick
I remember that! Vince Vaughn as the bad guy and Janene Garofolo as a cop, right? Ever see that movie with Owen Wilson as the postman and her as a co-worker? Totally straight role for her and she was good. Strange movie, too, given what Owen Wilson gets up to.
We've been on a foreign-thrillers-on-Netflix kick. I can recommend all three of the following unreservedly - I promise you you will be entertained more than you would with 95% of American thrillers: Headhunters (comedic elements, probably the most tightly plotted. Features the blond guy from Game of Thrones as the bad guy) Tell No One (tense, definitely not comedic. Of the three, perhaps the most believable, but only if you don't think about it too hard. Actually based on an American novel.) Point Blank (balls-to-the-wall non-stop action. Not John Woo action, or even Luc Besson action, but more like Bourne Identity style) Before that we watched Submarine, which was also awesome, but totally not a thriller. A painful coming of age comedy. Reminded me of The Year My Voice Broke (except in Wales, not Australia), and not just because the kid in that plays the dad in this. Directed by Moss from the IT Crowd.
Really liked Girl with Dragon Tattoo, and then followed it up with Brave in 3D. Pretty decent graphics, and my 2y/o didn't think it was too scary.
Looper. Interesting story line with gaping plot holes.
Prometheus. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie!
Sly, I think you will like this movie. The Thirteenth Floor
I thought Prometheus was awesome. Was it Alien....no, but I still really liked it. I hope Scott makes a sequel that expands on the engineers. All that said, I was a bit disappointed in the movie, but that was just because that trailer is so fucking bad ass. Has anyone here watched the extra footage on the Blu ray? I think it's supposed to explain a lot of the movie.
...Skyfall WAS really good. Looper was pretty good. Not into Sci-Fi so you can have your Prometheus et al. Next up: The Raven, Moonrise Kingdom, Lola Versus, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, and Butter.
