I watched Lincoln and didn't like it other than how fixated I was about how much Daniel Day Lewis looked like how I thought Lincoln would be. Luckily I watched it in a Cinetopia and was getting liquored up with my feet up on a futon. Seriously though Spielberg, couldn't you have made that like an hour and half shorter?
I know a lot of people really didn't like it. What were your expectations going in? I know a lot of the hate is from people who were expecting to see a sci-fi horror flick.
I'll admit that my expectations were high, but we're talking about Ridley Scott here! I had a lot of minor issues with the general plot arc and story-telling, but first and foremost I found the characters themselves to be awful. Flat out awful. Not a single one behaved in a way that seemed consistent and believable to me, and I struggled to care about any of them.
I really enjoyed the story line and thought the entire thing was beautifully shot, but honestly I don't remember all of the characters too well. I guess I didn't really like (or more likely care) about them too much. In the end I think the first two just outweighed (heavily) the lack of good characters to me. I can see why for others they wouldn't. Oh, and I think it being a Ridley Scott film propped up everyone's expectations. Being a pseudo Alien prequel and that trailer didn't help things either.
I agree with this. I remember walking out of the theater after I first saw it and wondering..... wtf did I just see? I thought it had a lot of holes and didn't explain much of anything. I watched it again on DVD and it wasn't so bad because I think it made a little more sense, but man that movie had a lot of holes.
I saw Expendables 2 last night on pay per view at my dads place. Pretty much got what I expected out of it. I usually go to a movie with my dad every week. Lincoln was an excellent movie. The pacing was fine. Maybe Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter would have been more entertaining for some. Of the movies mentioned I've seen all of these: Savages - Not Bad Lincoln - Great Lawless - Very Good Killer Joe - Good Prometheus - Not Bad - Nice to stare at either way. Skyfall - Great Headhunters - Very Good Point Blank - Good Tell No One - Great Looper - Good Argo - Good I've also seen: Cloud Atlas - Not Bad Safe House - Not Bad Arrietty - Good Jiro Dreams of Sushi - Good The Raid: Redemption - Great The Master - Good Seven Psychopaths - Good I'd like to see: Flight Django Unchained Beasts of the Southern Wild
Oh man, 100% this. "And an idiot woman who can only run in straight lines." But I agree about the visuals -- they were top-notch. I just couldn't get over all of the frustrating inconsistencies enough to enjoy them.
How does it compare with other Miyazaki? Or is that one by his son? Ooh, I really want to see this. I'd also like to see Dredd because it's supposed to be pretty much a rip-off (and also because I grew up with the comics). In Bruges good? It seems too packed with cult actors. Have you seen his brother's The Guard? I wanna see that too.
Arietty was only scripted by Miyazaki, but the movie itself is great. The English dub is a little too jokey, but otherwise it's great. Reminds me a lot of recent Miyazaki in tone and pace, but more grounded and less fantastical. Low-key and fun.
I haven't seen In Bruges, but I've seen The Guard. I quite enjoyed it. Seven Psychopaths reminds me of the movies that came out in the early/mid 90's. Lots of quirky characters and heaps of over the top violence, the latter of which I don't really have a taste for anymore, but It was still fun.
Random movie memory...... I saw earlier the Clay Pigeons link on here. That was a real cool movie. ANother one from that time that I really liked and haven't seen since is U-Turn! Great cast....... Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Jennifer Lopez, Powers Boothe, Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Voight, Joaquin Phoenix, Claire Danes, Liv Tyler
I recommend in Bruges. It's pretty effed up in parts, but good enough to get you through the "WTH?" moments.
Dark Knight Rises. I give it 2 and 1/2 stars out of 4. The "super criminal" was really a disappointment, not really worthy of a Batman comic and he was very hard to understand when he talked through that stupid looking muzzle. The total absence of organized crime and street gangs taking offense as well as a lack of armed citizens getting involved made the plot seem a bit silly. The action scenes were decent and the pace was good.
