Like I've said on previous posts; I don't think we should take away guns from the responsible gun handlers. What I do think is that there needs to be a tighter registration process. Just because a person is fucking bat shit crazy, doesn't mean that person can get into a car and drive into a very busy shopping area or park; killing a lot of innocent people. The difference is, if someone driving the car with someone else's car; the person registered is responsible if that person doesn't have insurance. My proposal: 1.) All registration of any firearms must go through a gun safety training course (I believe this is already a current policy; but being a government funded agency). The only difference is training on keeping your gun always locked up in a safe. 2.) If a gun isn't reported stolen and is used in any criminal act; the person owning a gun is just as responsible of the crime. 3.) There should be a yearly registration of every gun registered to an individual. There will be a license fee; just like vehicles which will cover the government training course and any other government related funding needed to enforce the gun law. 4.) Every 4 years, every gun owner must re-train at a gun safety course. It seems a little over the top; but I think individuals that want to own guns would pay fees to keep those guns. Also, the strict punishment for those that allow for their weapons to be used because they forgot to lock the weapon up; may have more responsible gun owners.
Okay, but here are two things that need to be considered: 1. What if the gun is stolen and the person has no idea? Many people have their guns put away and rarely take them out. 2. What if the gun is owned by someone in a family. Is the entire family required to go through the course? Also, I'm not necessarily opposed to these actions, but do you think this would stop something like the Newtown shooting from occurring?
Perhaps this will encourage people to check on their guns regularly, lock the triggers and put their guns in a real safe. Not a bad idea. Perhaps a subset course that doesn't involve every aspect of the primary owner's test. Ownership responsibility course or something. Plenty of people here have said it's a statistical anomaly so let's not worry about that.
The NRA offers a course called the Firearm Safety Course, which has zero shooting and is entirely an informative course on firearm safety, what types of guns there are, how to unload them, and how to safely handle them. The course is required for anyone who wants to get a CHL in Oregon. I think it would be a great class for anyone that has a gun in their home. It takes much of the mystery about guns away and at least gives people the basic knowledge how to disarm one if they find it.
How about if you make it on a fully voluntary basis so people who don't want to live in China don't get treated like they live in China? Or you could just move to China and make us both happy, since you're uncomfortable in a free society.
Ahhhh for a liberal; you contradict yourself with your "I want my guns without you government regulating it" banter. Kinda funny really.
What are the gun laws in france? We should do everything like the french do, after all. How about you pass a written test, and then demonstrate you know how to handle a gun at a firing range (e.g. how to load, fire, clean, use the safety, etc.)? I don't see why you'd need to get such a license renewed.
I do like what you are saying for the written and then a fire range test. I was thinking more of a yearly registration just like a car.
I'm not a "liberal" by any stretch of imagination, which you'd know if you actually read any of my posts. I'm a Real American who truly believes in the concept of individual Freedom which this country was founded on. Speaking of funny, a right-winger like yourself stumping for disarming the populace speaks volumes. The only right-wing gun control advocates throughout history have been the most murderous cretins that ever lived. Hitler is one you've probably heard of.
You voluntarily signed away that right when you legally accepted the requirement to carry a license. Had you not applied for and received a driver's license, you would still be legal to drive without one under the constitution. Thousands of Americans and millions of illegal immigrants know this and drive without licenses, and are never prosecuted for it.
Somehow guns need to go hi tech and only have the ability to be used by the owner. Not sure how, but that would solve a lot
Fee, Tax, permit, lisence, meh, all the same, its a tax..and why would you want to let the gov have any more control of the average person is silly we dont need more gun control, we need crazy person control the other day i mentioned that a 99 cent bic lighter is as much of a danger as a hand gun, look it up, in the fiftys a guy locked kids up in a school and set it on fire..96 kids killed..
Mags, please explain how any of your proposals would keep crazy people from killing people with guns? You seem to be more concerned with gun safety by legal owners, which I agree with. In fact it should be taught in schools. But the rest of your ideas are nothing but big-government, nanny-state, communist-tinged tyranny.
