Danny played both TE and LB in HS. While I'm not sure where he'll play at Oregon, here's an early December quote from him via rivals... "Right now, I think every school recruiting me is looking at me both on offense and defense and it could go either way," Mattingly said. "I like playing both so that doesn't really make the biggest difference." STOMP
247 has listed 5 players they are believe will commit to oregon, if it is like any of their previous lists they are most certainly wrong.
I recall their list from last year not being very accurate. Nonetheless, curious as to their 5 probables STOMP
In a rivals interview put out today, Danny Mattingly stated he will be a MLB at Oregon in the mold of Kiko. He described his opportunity as "awesome" and his recruitment as "all done" that gives them 3 LBs verbally committed... Tyrell Robinson, Walker & Mattingly STOMP
this news makes me very happy. Kiko was a 3* (5.5) LB according to rivals. Mattingly is 3* (5.7 so borderline 4*) Kiko turned out to be pretty good. Also further solidifies my thoughts that our past ceilings in LB recruits are our current floors.
Kiko took the full 4 years to develop prior to his senior year and had a hard time so much so between sophomore and junior years he almost didn't remain on the team. He wasn't an instant stud, and Oregon is very good at coaching players up. This year we have opening in who starts at LB, and would be nice to have found that player who can compete right away to push everyone in the group to improve. Maybe Mattingly is it.
Oh I know he wasnt an instant stud. He def had his mostly mental mistakes. But he was also less thought of as a 3* than Mattingly as well, was mostly what I was getting at.
I'm already penciling in Coleman and Lokombo as 2 starters (Tony Washington makes 3 of 4 if some count him as an LB)
OT: Vanderdoes decommits from USC. If only we had guys like Kiffin to wrap him up! I kid I kid.... kinda
Coleman backed up Lokombo this past year while Malone backed up Michael Clay and played well as a spot starter when he was out with injury. My guess is they probably stay at their same LB positions and Malone is one of the starters while Coleman remains a backup. It should be fun seeing who emerges at Drop End and Kiko's Inside spot STOMP
Ah well. I have a feeling Notre Dame will ship hard for him, mainly because of their defensive prowess.
VanderNOTHING is following the hot team and has since someone told him he could get attention. First it was Oregon, then he jumps on the bandwagon for USC with everyone else, then VanderDork finds out Lamo can't coach, so he jumps with Redfield to the next logical spot ND! What happens when Bama tunes up ND in the national championship? Will Redfield and VanderDoof head to Bama next? Monte Kiffin is no longer there to save his punk sons job! Now the recruits are making a mass exodus as I expected! Wheels? With Monte Kiffin #1 recruiting class and probably the best they've had in 10 years, without Monte? You're seeing it now, so thanks for showing why ya need a kick ass recruiter!
No need to be bitter, he is obviously a very easily influenced young man. A massive amount of negative recruiting turned him cold to us. He'll end up somewhere, just not here and hopefully he can shrug off this peer pressure before it causes stuff to happen in his life more worrying than just his college selection.
I'm not bitter at all! This is a huge blessing, this kid is more about the limelight than football, and that goes for Redfield too. Neither would fit our team concept, as their egos would be bigger than their helmets!
No the two I'm yanked that we didn't get are Hutchins and Bostwick and that we lost Redmond to UCLA a team that cashed in the last three games of their season!
I thought I'd let you (incorrectly) refer to Kiffin as the recruiting Coordinator a few times before I posted this... http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/orgeron_ed01.html
