Bryan Colangelo tried to get Gay around draft time but didn't have a nice enough package to entice Chris Wallace. The rumoured offer on the table is Jose Calderon, Ed Davis, and future second round picks for the 26-year old forward. Memphis is thought to be interested in taking back as little salary as possible (ruling out a deal for DeRozan or Bargnani). The purpose of any Gay trade would be to avoid paying the luxury tax this season. Colangelo's original offer included Terrence Ross (8th pick) but the Raptors are now thought to be too high on the young wing and not willing to include him. Why Memphis would want Ed Davis is beyond me. They don't really need him unless they want to offload Zbo which essentially would be blowing that team up (they were in 1st!).
Gay is owed $37m or so over the next two seasons. In the current deal taking him would increase our salary to about $70m next year with 12 players under contract. Seems unlikely. In addition to moving Calderon we need to also unload either DeRozan or Bargnani.
With Raptors brass evaluating whether to extend Colangelo or let him walk, big moves like this one might be tabled. They don't want to hamstring the next GM coming in, if that is the situation.
Why would the Grizz want Ed Davis? They are a legit playoff team with the best front court in the league. Ed Davis would be a back up for them, on par with Darrel Arthur. People seem to forget that just because he looks good on the Raptors, doesn't mean he will start on other teams. I don't think the Grizz want to get too much worse even if they are nearing luxury tax. That being said, I hope BC doesn't get carried away and include Ross or Val in the deal. I'm not even sure I want to give up Derozan for Gay. While Gay is the superior player, he is paid A LOT. It would essentially handcuff the next GM for 3 years. I know the Raptors don't really use cap space very well, but a more capable GM than Colangelo might be better at it.
