Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) doesn't like President Barack Obama's health care reform law. It's too expensive and too intrusive, he says. And Bryant has another reason to oppose the law, he revealed in an interview with Kaiser Health News: It's not necessary because everyone's doing just fine now. If that sounds familiar, it's because this is a common rationale offered by opponents of expanding government programs that provide health care coverage. Bryant and others are referring to a 1986 federal law requiring hospitals that receive Medicare money (i.e., almost all of them) to stabilize and treat anyone who shows up with an emergency medical condition regardless of ability to pay. I want to say something. This is crap. Yes you can go to the ER to get treated temporarily, but the hospital will sew you if you cannot pay or do not pay faster than they want you to. Insurance companies do not do that. So this is not 'insurance' it is treatment for that one time, and not true insurance coverage. My wife was turned down for disability in Mississippi. We went to try and get her medicate after that, and she has to wait a year because the application goes to the same people that had decided she was not disabled in the first place. She does not have insurance. Now I wrote to the congressmen in district 2 asking him to help her get coverage. I wrote to Gov Bryant and never heard back from neither of them! Bryant is more concerned about the national conversation than he is about people in his own state. I wrote to the senators and Thad Cochran wrote me back. He promised to look into helping her get insurance. I do not expect it to work, but I am pleased he took the time to write back to a person in his state. That is something in itself. In the meantime, we refiled her case, yet again. Mississippi has given us the run around in most of the state ran agencies since we have been here. Medicate alone has given us three different explanations as to why she cannot get insurance all three times we have been to see her. People are paid to discourage people!
