Here's an excerpt from the Hippocratic Oath:
So, do you think your doctor will want to prescribe something for you that kills you?

The side effects for most prescription drugs are far more dangerous than cigarettes, and kill far more people.

As with all the other drugs your doctor prescribes for you, it will depend solely on what kickbacks he gets from the manufacturer.

So, when my doctor prescribed generic penicillin for me this week, he was getting a kick back? From who?

I'm surprised they still use that to treat the clap.

Legal drugs are just as dangerous as cigs and coke.

The Rx drugs, maybe....if you use them every day of your life. There are some that are risky even if taken over a fairly short time. Very damned few if you're talking about taking an antibiotic for a short period of time (or TONS of other types of drugs), to treat an acute problem, then stop taking them. No comparison to smoking a pack a day, every day.

Unless you can provide a link to a legitimate study, coke is not more dangerous than cigarettes. That's out there where the buses don't run.

I'm almost at 1 month smoke free after 20+ years as a smoker. It's just not right how available it is in our society, especially when under age. I was 14 when I started smoking and had no problem buying something physically addictive that interferes with neurological reward pathways and causes cancer. That's wrong. I do believe in being able to make ones one choices as an American, but something is wrong with us when we continue to make this choice. I do believe selling to minors or giving them cigarettes should result in very high fines, like $500 per cigarette.

Way to avoid answering the question. Who is going to give my doctor the kickback?

It's ok if you can't answer. Just admit that you're full of it. It's not like we don't know already.

I started smoking in my early 20s. I tried smoking at a younger age - I stole a cigarette from my mom's purse. Fine her $500?

I'm on my 5th month not smoking. I hold no animosity toward smokers or the industry as you do. We both know the dangers of smoking and that it's addicting. We knew before we took our first puff. It's OUR fault, no? Just as it's our awesomeness to quit.

The patent on penicillin must have expired decades ago, since it was discovered in the 1920s. I bet the prescription cost you maybe $15.

Actually, it was $8 (it is a generic). I just wondered what kind of kickback Maris thought my doctor got for prescribing it for me.

I think there are lots of cases where the doctors will prescribe what the drug reps suggest. Suggest being bribery in some cases (like paid trips to warm beaches, and that sort of thing).

Drug reps also leave samples that the doctors give away. My doctor has given me a few of those samples so I didn't have to pay.
