Despite unloading several players and a pick to clear cap and get out of the luxury tax apparently the Grizzlies are still looking to cut costs and have been chatting up Bryan Colangelo. The Raptors are supposedly floating Jose Calderon's expiring deal and Ed "Too Good for Toronto" Davis for overpaid Grizzlies wing Rudy Gay. The timing of the talks comes with news that Andrea Bargnani could be returning to action soon.
Paying $40-million/season for DeRozan-Gay-Bargnani is BC's master-plan, apparently. We're gunning for 9th.
Problem is no one is wants Bargnani while Calderon and Davis are attractive pieces. I don't mind the trade, in the proposed deal we get Darrell Arthur back who could be just as good as Davis. Amir is also basically the same player as Ed. No big deal. Admittedly, Gay has been pretty bad this year but he could use a change of scenery since he is pretty much the third option.
I don't know about this deal to be honest, I think Rudy Gay is a fine player but I can't really see the end game behind the deal, just seems like a desperate so BC can save his job. I mean, is the goal to assemble a mediocre core of derozan/gay/jonas? who are all fine players but are just complimentary players at the very best. The worst thing about such a core is that it''ll be just good enough to keep us from getting that high draft pick so we can get a true difference maker.
