Offseason: One big player or three good bench players? What would you do?

Discussion in 'Portland Trail Blazers' started by JFizzleRaider, Jan 29, 2013.

?

Which path would you take for our offseason?

  1. Go Big (Pekovic, Jefferson, Josh Smith, Paul Millsap etc.)

    36.0%
  2. Bench Shopping (getting three quality bench players)

    48.0%
  3. Neither (lopsided trades for assets, players etc.)

    16.0%

Do you think we should spend all our money on a big like Al Jefferson or Nikola Pekovic?

Or would you rather spread the $$$ among Hickson, Redick, Boobie Gibson to fill out our bench (with the hope Leonard progresses to a starter)?

Or would you rather use the space to acquire guys from teams looking to dump players (like Memphis did with some quality players) with assets (picks)?

And yes, I know MM has an offseason thread, but I thought a "poll option" would be good to have an easy way to look back on after the offseason to see who wanted what.

I voted neither, in hopes of using for a trade, but absent of that, I see nobody I want to spend big money on, so second choice would be bench guys.

Not big money on Jefferson, but I'd offer Pek about 11-12 million.

*Nikola Pekovic - Entering his prime, legit starting center. Leonard is clearly a ways away.
    *Sign Kosta
    *Deport Freeland and Claver
    *Draft BPA

Pek is built like a tank. I'd love to sign him away for $11-12 million per year.

Well that would be awfully silly for him to pigeonhole himself into just one avenue ... and besides, even if he did max one guy out, he'd still have a caproom exception worth 2.5 million and the veteran's minimum to offer somebody else.

I would do this. And if it doesn't pan out, we could still keep hickson at 7 mil after and build with a 6 mil offer to reddick and use vet mle for a vet

Allen planned the lock out all along. He knows that only a few teams have owners or revenues to support a luxury tax team. All the sudden playing in Portland ain't half bad! :)

I don't think adding Hibbert would have made this team a perennial championship contender, nor do I think overpaying Pekovic $11-12 million would either....

I picked door number one, but I think it's more likely to be achieved through door number three. So, one and three.

So if you were Detroit, you'd trade Monroe for Matthews and Leonard?

Yes because their deficiency is at SG. They may lose Maxiell this summer. Monroe and Drummand, IMO, can't play at the same time. So the question is "Do they want to keep Drummand or Monroe?"

EDIT: Another Angle could be sign and trade Hickson and Matthews for Monroe, Prince and B. Knight

    http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=amp83fo

I just used Lillard because his contract of 3 mil + 4 mil for Hickson should add up to what Hickson may demand this summer.

I think you have some pretty solid over/under valuating going on. Hickson and Matthews for Monroe, Prince and Knight?

Maxing out a player is almost always a bad move.
A bunch of middling players will just take us from a borderline lotto team, to a Playoff team, but not a contender.
Only way to turn this team into a contender is through trades. Unless we somehow get lucky with one of those late draft picks who becomes a star player.
