My girl actually went to high school with this guy. She said he seemed really nice and his dad was the high school football coach.

 

They are going so far to try to shield Manti....just silly. They really think America is stupid.

 

The tell to me is going on TV to try and concoct some bullshit narrative.

At the very best, Te'o was duped by some gay guy he knew. Problem is that not going to the funeral of his "girlfriend" was an obvious red flag, considering how much Te'o had talked about his cancer girl. What, they had to have the funeral on a Saturday when Notre Dame was playing?

The problem with lying is that you have to remember the last lie you told. The best part of the truth is that you don't have to remember a story.

 

He will never admit the lie, and America will get bored and move on. Unless someone can produce actual physical evidence that he knew, I highly doubt he'll ever come clean.

Funny coincidence. Well, not really funny. I'm older than most here and when I was in hs there was no Gay Straight Alliance, no one was out, hell, no one was gay, theoretically. Even those who knew all their lives they were "different" did not know what name to put on it. I had a friend, a boy a couple of years older, we were really close. After he left school we lost touch but then I ran into him by chance days before splitting for the more compatible environs of UC Berkeley. He had joined a "Christian" group whose main, though never publicly stated, aim was what we now call "pray away the gay". That was some 40 years ago and from time to time I wondered what became of him, was he some bitter repressed so called "Christian right" (NO, I know not all Christians are like that, don't jump on me) who talked about how awful gays were while having fleeting meetings in airport restrooms, too repressed for an open relationship? Was he dead? Two days ago, by chance, I found out he is music producer at a gay record label in San Francisco, also known for their elaborate album art. (He was a very talented artist and loved rock music.) So maybe the god to whom he was praying thought it was cool for him to be gay after all. On a really crappy day, I was smiling all afternoon knowing my dear long gone friend was alive, well, out and doing something he probably enjoyed. I hope he was not tormented or traumatized too badly trying to "pray away the gay", but he's come through all right. And that makes me happy.

Do you know what it's like to wonder about the fate of someone for 40 years - and then find out he's good? [Here's to you my dear long ago friend. Now you're in San Francisco, wear flowers in your hair for me ... if you still have hair.]

BTW no one had ever heard of gaydar but on the rare occasions I hear about someone I hung out with in hs, guess what, the men are invariably gay and about half the women. We had never heard of gaydar but clearly we all had it.

(I know this is OT to the OT, but I had to tell. And no, you don't pray away the gay. Accept it, celebrate it, do what you love, find someone to love, and be happy.)

Drexler's Dad, gaydar is set off by actually talking to a person. I've not really spoken to pro athletes beyond "may I have your autograph?" or "great game". The only ones who set off gaydar are out female athletes. Obviously some LGBT people are really blatant in dress or appearance but most are not. My friend I referred to was not, we all wore jeans and back then every teen boy wore hair as long as school authorities allowed. Words sometimes do it, a person being careful never to use gendered pronounds (he, she, him, her) when talking of significant other to strangers. But gaydar is really undefinable, a sense, a feeling of kindredness.

Rereading, I sounded a bit obsessional - I don't mean I did nothing for decades but worry about my friend! But the group he got into still exists and I sometimes see their tables at shopping centers, where they dishonestly say they want to help young people "at risk", act like they're talking drugs, when it's gays. So I kept being reminded. And when a friend is doing something so self destructive, I worry.
