And even before that we've always had black people playing pimps, drug dealers and criminals in TV shows. It's not like they were never on TV.

You must be younger than I thought. From the 50s I only remember seeing the Nat King Cole show a couple of times. And Rochester, Jack Benny's butler.

So...either we have a stereotypical black man (George Jefferson, Sanford<No T> wasn't a really positive role model, Give me a break was a black woman who had to clean up after a white guy, Webster had to be adopted by white people, same with Diff'ren Strokes (cept he had a rich snobby white daughter too), and the one token black kid in a school/home?

Of those you listed, only the Cosby show showed blacks in a non comical setting (in the sense they weren't caricatures).

Is it really that big of a deal that a network is called "black entertainment network"? I mean, us whites only had ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS, PBS, TBS, Disney, Nickelodeon, MTV (in it's earliest incarnation), VH1, TNN, USA, and so on and so on and so on....

Don't forget about Huggy Bear! Or Spear Chucker! Or the black guy on Cheers! Or the black guy on Friends! Or the black guy on Seinfeld! Or the black guy on Will and Grace! Or the black guy on Alf! or the black guy on M*A*S*H (once they chucked spear chucker)! or the black guy who starred on Chips! Or Dukes of Hazzard! Or....

(Nichelle Nichols was one of the earliest black important characters on TV, that wasn't a stereotypical "place" for a black person)

Oh, so you need to downplay all of the black shows. Well, I was just getting warmed up. There was also Julia, Good Times, Fat Albert, What's Happening, Hanging with Mr. Cooper, sister sister, Oprah, Kennan and Kal, the NBA, Sammy Davis Jr and the Sinbad show.

No Black TV shows.......get outta here.....:pimp:

ok, name me the black TV shows in the 50's, or 60's?

name me the major black stars from the 50's and 60's.

    go on..

if you don't honestly see that there was stereotypical character roles for blacks in the 70's and 80's and 90's, then I don't even see any reason to continue discussing this.

And besides, WHO GIVES A FUCK that there is 1 network called "black entertainment" network? Is that really troublesome?

I thought CMT, Fox News, Lifetime and Hallmark were the white people channels.

In the 50's and 60's you had Julia and Beluah. In 1950, only 10% of the population was black, and probably only about 15 black people in the nation had TVs. So what would be the sense in making a TV shows that target such a small % of the population? Political Correctness hadn't been invented back then.

If you're so worried about watching black people on TV, by all means, watch BET, order the collection of "Girlfriends" on DVD....

In 2011, only 13% of the population was black.

17% were Latino. I don't recall a Latino TV show on the major networks since Hey Pablo and the George Lopez Show were 15 years apart.

Wow, I didn't realize that Black History Month was such a hot-button issue. What harm is really coming from a symbolic appreciation for a minority group? It's a celebration that has largely become a joke for suburban white teenagers to toast 40's to anyway.

Does it really bug ya'll that much that we take the time to acknowledge those that overcame and endured the torment of a government that vilified them based on their skin tone? That was a dark era in American history, and it wasn't that long ago. How some of you feel that Bill Cosby having a TV show somehow means that we should completely forget the struggles that the government and majority of the population forced upon the African American population is beyond me.

In terms of racial holidays though, I find the way that MLK Day is evolving to be increasingly disturbing. My grandfather was a civil rights leader from Missouri who worked closely with MLK and several other prominent civil rights activists, but the MLK Day holiday should not be about a single man but rather a movement. Our nation sees MLK Day as a day to remember MLK first and remember the movement secondarily. MLK has become deified by the media, as if he's to black people what Jesus is to Christians, and that's honestly a nauseating concept.

Interesting items i learned in college ethnic studies classes.

White people dont know what racism is because we are the majority, not a minority.

Yea, me dating an indian girl who hung out with mostly indians didnt subject me to racism when all the dudes treated me like shit because im white.

White males are the worst and are the key to racism.

Here is an idea, why dont we stop talking about race and racism so everyone just moves on and treats each other as people

... Eliminating black history month would help accomplish this.

Hawaii, New Mexico, California, Texas, and D.C. have a higher population of "minorities" than white people, and eventually, though not in any of our lifetimes, this will be the case throughout the United States. Racism will become a smaller and smaller problem. Unfortunately, bigotry will never go away.
