Back when we were kids, torture was bamboo shoots under fingernails or gonads connected to the jeep battery. What has become of the world when making a prisoner listen to Nine Inch Nails at loud volume, or to be forced to wear underwear on your head is torture?
The last blanket statement I remember is when King Speed exclaimed he had had sex with an NBA player. Er, I meant under the blanket statement.
Quite a few of our presidents were military. Eisenhower was the military governor of Germany and MacArthur was the military governor of Japan. These guys were among the smartest people our country has had. They, and most of the US military commanders were at the front lines. The US military colleges are very old and quite exclusive. All of the officers are college graduates. The really smart guys who don't go to college advance as non-commissioned officers. Dozens of Generals died in WW II on the front line. Where was George Washington crossing the Delaware if not on the front lines? Just sayin'
How have they lowered standards? General Wesley Clark ran for president in 2004. EDIT: General Colin Powell was Secy. of State
You're telling me that the military hasn't lowered the standards for what they accept in recruits, by pointing out a guy who enlisted in 1962?
You'll have to provide some example of these lowered standards. If anything, they need a higher standard of recruit - people with police training and especially technically savvy enough to pilot drones.
I just didn't have a mommy and daddy that were going to put me through college. At that time I felt it was my only option to succeed in life. Wasn't ever a real gung-ho army guy, just needed some guidance.
And as a bonus, I got to blow shit up and kill some people......... and got a great deal and alot of help on our first house.
um. seriously? http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,308880,00.html http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/war_stories/2008/01/dumb_and_dumber.html http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89702118 http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-10-09-army-recruiting_x.htm http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-201_162-2074099.html http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,78111,00.html http://www.veteransunited.com/network/new-military-recruiting-standards-signal-the-end-of-an-era/ Seriously, you're going to sit there and act like they haven't lowered standards?
Do you read your own links? They're talking about 2600 army recruits. "The U.S. Army recruited more than 2,600 soldiers under new lower aptitude standards this year, helping the service beat its goal of 80,000 recruits in the throes of an unpopular war and mounting casualties."
Or your last link: That option is becoming less available as the military begins to scale down in earnest, especially the Army, where recruiting requirements are increasingly more stringent and more soldiers are finding themselves unable to reenlist. Also, with the poor job market for many college graduates, more recruits with at least some college under their belts are seeking job experience through the military. In short, it is becoming more competitive than ever to secure a spot in our nation’s Armed Forces. ... Army officials hope to accomplish most of the necessary cuts through increased recruiting standards and voluntary separations.
There was a military draft for much of the late 60s and early 70s. The only standards were that you could walk and talk.
This short article is full of soldiers behaving badly. They followed Bush policy; they weren't rogues disobeying orders. http://archive.truthout.org/iraq-wa...t-people-and-officers-would-take-care-us58378
Come on HCP... hurray for killing people? Towel heads? You think if we had "lost" the first gulf war, we wouldn't have the freedom to post on S2? Don't prove him right, fams.
Wow, you come off as a real jerkoff. I have family and friends serving and they're not assholes or anything. They're respectable people with strong ethical guidelines. I mean, seriously, have you actually gone outside of your little suburb in Tualatin and actually meet REAL soldiers from other areas and other backgrounds? I'm not talking about a bunch of dumb high school aged trigger pullers. And I'm not talking about some Michael Moore documentary or some article you read on TruthLeftyPeaceNow.org or whatever. I mean, you do understand that, contrary to what you see on TV, the military isn't all just shooting people up and bombing things, right? Go and meet some real people who joined up and not the idiots who have obviously clouded your judgment. Otherwise, get off your high horse. Btw, here's a list of renown leaders, actors, writers, etc who have served so don't get me this BS about only dumb people going off to fight/join the service: George Washington Dwight Eisenhower John F. Kennedy Teddy Roosevelt Everyone from Truman-Bush Sr. John Coltrane Johnny Cash Kris Kristofferson T.E. Lawrence Gene Hackman Mel Brooks Charles Durning Gene Wilder James Earl Jones Clint Eastwood Paul Newman James Stewart Ice-T Dennis Hopper Drew Carrey Oliver Stone Ernest Hemingway F Scott. Fitzgerald Thomas Pynchon William Faulkner (disputed) Jack Kerouac Joseph Heller Hunter S. Thompson Kurt Vonnegut Gore Vidal J RR Tolkien Pat Tilman Randy Couture Joe Lewis Joe DiMaggio Jackie Robinson David Robinson Yogi Berra etc, etc
