"Dallas Morning News - Mavericks forward Josh Howard has one year at $1.66 million left on his rookie contract, and if an extension is not signed by Oct. 31 he will become a restricted free agent next summer, a scenario the club wants to avoid. Will a deal be reached in time? "I'm not supposed to talk about it," the forward said. "That's a touchy subject. I'll let my agent and Mark [Cuban] deal with that." Cuban's policy is not to comment on ongoing negotiations. Five players from Howard's draft class ? Cleveland's LeBron James, Miami's Dwyane Wade, Denver's Carmelo Anthony and Toronto's Chris Bosh ? signed extensions earlier this summer. Howard won't command the money those players received. Tayshaun Prince would be a good starting point. The Detroit small forward signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract on the eve of opening night last season. Howard averaged more points, rebounds, steals and shot for a higher percentage than Prince did last season. "No disrespect to him," Howard said, "but he doesn't do the same thing for Detroit that I do for Dallas."http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives...easuring_stick/i guess thats normal for a player who plays similar to another player to use them, and see what their contract is then get their contract off of it

Yeah it makes sense. Howard is actually better than Prince so it's not like Josh Howard is asking for too much.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Yeah it makes sense. It's a good price for him, I'd probably go up just a little but not too much. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>"No disrespect to him," Howard said, "but he doesn't do the same thing for Detroit that I do for Dallas."</div> That makes me worry that he'll want more and negotiations won't go smoothly.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>5 years 50 mil</div> That seems to be the consensus among Mavs fans as the ideal deal. Anything over that, is a little extreme.

The guy deserves to be paid, and as the most underrated, and overlooked, until late last season, player from the 03' draft, Cuban shouldn't mess with him at all...Like Dirk has said, "He does all the things I don't do"...that's why we need him, even if it cost us more than it did to lock up Tayshaun...he is right, he's the #2 guy in Dallas, and is a bigger part of the team than Tayshaun is in Detroit.

5 Years with 50 million would be a great deal for Dallas but I doubt Howard settles for that. I would say 5 years and 60 million is more like it.

He should match Tayshauns contract, but he should go up slightly

Greg Buckner is getting that kind of money, Bron and Wade are making more then 50 so 50 is about the range for Howard.

Yeah I guess but wouldn't be surprised if he asked for slightly more. I think he could've had a better year last year if it weren't for the injuries so I think the upside is big on him.

His style of play is a risk to overpay.
