Assailants stripped, tortured and bound a woman accused of witchcraft, then burned her alive in front of hundreds of witnesses in a Papua New Guinea town, police said Friday after one of the highest profile sorcery-related murders in this South Pacific island nation.

Some of the hundreds of bystanders took photographs of Wednesday's brutal slaying. Grisly pictures were published on the front pages of the country's biggest circulating newspapers, The National and Post-Courier. The prime minister, police and diplomats condemned the killing.

Kepari Leniata, a 20-year-old who had a child, had been accused of sorcery by relatives of a 6-year-old boy who died in the hospital the day before, police spokesman Dominic Kakas said.

She was tortured with a hot iron rod, bound, doused in gasoline, then set alight on a pile of car tires and trash in the Western Highlands provincial capital of Mount Hagen, Kakas said.

I just can't wrap my mind around this factor - ...hundreds of bystanders took photographs of Wednesday's brutal slaying...

Is it any different than people watching war footage of ww2 or even applauding deaths of hundreds of thousands for freedom?

I don't. What makes this more horrifying is its focused on one person. The end result is the same. Someone died on a belief. People that are patriotic to "mother Russia" had no problem exhaulting a solder for killing 20 soldiers. Or an American getting a bronze star for killing 30 afghanis.

I think he is going more for the angle that he can't believe they would take pictures and watch instead of trying to stop this from happening.

Thought you of all people would understand this, and yeah, I know, once in a while your true persona slips out and i have to respond in kind. Come on man, you have to remember the VN war at five, all the picsof Japs cutting off heads in WW2, Germans exicuting Jews and Russians in any variety of ways possiable, go further back to public hangings, there have been pics of every and all kinds of public exicution..jeeesh there are stone carvings from the aztecs tothe greeks of public exicutions..I think you would like to believe we ae a more evolved race..sad to say, it is not true.
