This has been my thinking as well. Maybe we help a team over the salary cap get a player they could not normally get on the free agent market. Second round draft pick? Heck PA can just buy those . . . if he even wants them.
Agreed - the possibility of a S&T is more beneficial than a 2nd rounder. And if there is a soft market for him this summer, then signing him to a reasonable contract would make him a far more valuable trade asset in the future - you can be sure that we won't make the same mistake of just giving him a single year contract.
What im "complaining" about is tanking implies not trying to win by putting yourself into a position that winning becomes damn near impossible usually by trading all the good vets and making the young players play significant minutes. If we are not able to trade Hickson before the deadline, IMO it would be a bad decision to be stuck with his $8mil cap hold at the end of the season, for obvious reasons. In which case, no bird rights and we can bid for his services like everyone else. If we do trade him for some/any asset by the deadline, at the end of the season we can bid for his services like everyone else (just like last year). One option gives us an extra asset (or more) and roughly the same chance to resign him if we want to. I pick that one. That option also likely gets us a better lottery pick, and gets it this year when we need it. Trade him.
When can he be S&T? Is it after July 1st? Cause until he is S&T we have little cap room for a real difference maker
I would assume July 1. You can't (officially) sign a free agent from another team until that same date as well.
Who's this FA "real difference maker"? I don't see any - at least none that we should throw an additional $8M at. We can address some of our depth issues with some UFAs, but if you want a "real difference maker" you're going to have to trade for him. Unless you think Dalembert is a "real difference maker" - and, due to our lack of a C, he is. But it's more of a stop-gap action than anything.
I'm a big fan of not worrying about what happens in the lottery. If we land a pick, fine. If we lose a pick, well, if we wanted it so badly we shouldn't have traded it away. My thing is I refuse to root to lose. Coach and play to win every game, period. Anything less simply ruins any hope of building a winning culture. I'd rather see these kids strive and fail than fold and coast.
Even though it's been said before, I'll say it again. You're setting up the dichotomy incorrectly. Nobody is telling anybody to coast - all players should strive to win at all times. But the game plan needs to change from "burn out your starters" to "develop the MANY rookies on the bench". This may very well result in more losses, but it won't be because anybody is coasting. And it appears that even if we continue to burn out our starters we may lose a lot anyway.
You can build as much of a "winning culture" as you like, but if you don't have the talent it doesn't amount to anything. The NBA more than almost any team sport is driven by individual talent -- because there are so few players on the court able to affect the outcomes of games. If this was football I'd agree that building a "winning culture" is of prime importance, but that model doesn't work in this sport.

They have to get something for Hickson, and convince Hickson to make the move. I almost was concocting a conspiracy for the very odd rotation of Stotts the last two games. As in Hickson and a few of the younger guys were pulled out/held out of the Heat game because of a pending deal that fell through overnight, or was delayed.
I recall last season when many of us changed our avatars to reflect the hope for a TANK. That scheme ended up in Damian Lillard becoming a Blazer. No reason to make the playoffs at this point, is there?
Actually, the Wallace trade ended up in Damian Lillard becoming a Blazer. The "tank" netted us Meyers Leonard. Jury's still out on that one.
