The average NBA fan probably doesnt know who Paul Pierce is, or even Gilbert Arenas for that matter. Nowadays people just go to games for pure entertainment, they're not even a true fan of that specific team. It upsets me because I think the sport should be taken more seriously, and people need to know their stuff. That way basketball can even become one of the top sports in the US, up there with Baseball and Football. And people can enjoy it even more. I watch Football games on TV and the fans are so serious and they support their teams so much. Dressing in these crazy outfits or wearing face paint to show their support for their teams. You dont see that in the NBA, I see buisness men in fancy suits going to a game right after work with some friends just to relax..what do you guys think about this matter?
well I don't nessicarily disagree with you, there are people who take basketball to an extreme. but the problem with the NBA is how distant the league and the players are from the common fan. both the NFL, and MLB do great promotional things with the fans, were by the NBA tends to distance itself from the fans.the NBA has also taken huge publicity blackeyes with the lockout of 98, the near lockouts in 02, and 05, and the Detroit Brawl. these types of things have kinda made the common fan stay away from the basketball arenas. also, most NBA teams with the except of Portland, Sacramento,Utah, and San Antonio have to compete in the same cities as NFL and MLB. and as you stated those fans are more passionate for those other two sports, so it isn't until Febuary when those fans start showing up to the NBA games. and Febuary is by far the most boring month for the NBA, because thats the time when teams rest their stars and you start seeing a lot of no names playing. the competitiveness of the games falls than, and fans are disinterested.I think if the League wanted to get fans that engaged they should make players and team personal more availible to fans, lower ticket prices, and make the areas not so daunting and unfriendly.

I think you need to look at the demographic of people who like the sport. Yes suits go to basketball, because it appeals to them. Beer swilling loud stained shirt people are drawn to the "violence" of football. and the simpleness of baseball. I think even with lower ticket prices the fan type will remain mostly the same.

I agree 100%.
Basketball is not an "underrated sport", jus tless htan football and baseball because they've had a name for much longer. Basketball came out in early 1900's and even when Wilt was playing there still was never any attention payed to it. The sport that deserves more attention in america is soccer, no one knows any soccer players.
bobby adu or whatever. or wait. that's his name right? lol. plays with DC?... hmm. I know some internat. players from the WC, but not US players
I think its Freddie Adu. I agree Soccer needs more attention in this country, its actually a pretty cool sport; I've been watching the MLS recently and its not to bad. plus if the US actually ever became a power then there would truely be an international game out there.
Well I cant exactly agree because I dont live in the US..and here basketball's the main sport..everyone plays.

Thats fairly arrogant! Soccer sux anyway.
Yeah soccer does kinda sock along with baseball. I don't get why baseball is talked about so much since it is a bore. Football is overrated as well. Tennis is the underrated sport imo. I guess many people don't understand the game so they choose not to watch it.
I am going to agree with you on the aspect that basketball will never be as big as baseball or football, but dont u think that is understandable? Baseball and Football have both been around alot longer and it is a sport that more people can be interested in....for some odd reason. The reason football is more popular, is for the reason that there arent as many games, so people view every game as more important. I know that I get more up for watching a football game but that doesnt mean that I like it more. Its just for the fact that they dont come on as much. And as for baseball, its Americas sport. We are the country that plays it the most and we want to be able to call it our own. We cant say that about a sport like soccer for example. Also, it has been around alot longer than basketball has. And as much as I hate to say it, the fact that African Americans dominate the sport is one reason. Even though its ridiculous to say, white people are jealous and they dont view it as something interesting becasue they know that they cant succeed in it. Those are just my views....And for the record, an average fan WOULD know who Paul Pierce and Gilbert Arenas are....they are obviously not a fan if they dont know stars such as them. AND, it would work that way in any sport for that matter...

i think it's pretty ridiculous that baseball can be even half as popular as basketball. most boring sport ever invented. to play and to watch.
basketball is on the rise..look for the NBA to compete with the NFL in the near future for ratings and attendancewhy is baseball in this argument? not many people like baseball and whenever i see a game on TV more than half the seats are empty.. it was kinda like watching a blazers gameEDIT: and basketball PLAYERS are also the most popular..the average american will know Michael Jordan over any football player... theyll know lebron james, shaquille o'neal.. probably dwyane wade.. thats just the average american

Not boring at all. It's lightyears ahead of golf in both playing and watching categories. Maybe you say that because it's 9 innings every night. It is actually very fun to play.
The most overrated sports are the ones that I hate, while the most underrated sports are the ones that I love.
