That will require players with quick reaction time and movement. Some of our players don't strike me as "quick."
Those players that swarm are usually the wings. I think Matthews, batum and Lillard are pretty quick; but batum should be the main wanderer. He is actually quick and long. The bigs just need to protect the post.
Preferably, I'd like to have two good post defenders. These guys can score when needed, although I rather have them anchor the D. Then have the wings as the perimeter defenders that can score quickly. I like the makeup of our team with LA and Hickson as the exceptions. LA can score, but I'm not keen on his defense. And Hickson is not a premier defender. We are missing that brute force in the middle. It'll be difficult for our team to get a great defender at the 5 as a free agent. Trading for one would be the most likely scenario.
or is a lot of it on the guy in charge of D - Canales? It's funny, I ask this question here from time to time and it just gets ignored, does no one think he might be a lousy coach?
I've responded to the Canales questioning as a defensive coordinator. I've repeatedly answered "Obviously he is not that good!"
I think Canales is in over his head trying to coax defense out of players in general, Hickson in particular. I think it's a lot easier to get players to follow instructions on offense. But on defense, with the type of mental focus and physical effort and energy it takes to play consistent good defense, within the defensive scheme, giant basketball players whose contract depends on points and rebounds are more likely to just tune out Skippy the AV guy.
