Zags and his boys are out there workin' hard to I'm sure. It's too bad that unions have the stigma they do, but there has been a history of shady shit going down.

You attitude makes it sound like a union is this great gig where you get all these great benefits for no reason. There is reason you get all those benefits, it's because you don't/can't have a lazy day and work your butt off every working day for your company. You are in a union to protect yourself from being exploited. Those pencil pushers (funny how you take offense about me making assumptions about you yet you do the same thing, "lol") you are talking about would love to exploit your hard work and profit off it all and leave you with nothing.

Bottom Line: Union work is hard, taking orders from the boss, work! Posters against unions need to realize union workers aren't free loaders taking advantage of companies, they work hard and constantly have to take orders to keep the company going, they are an integral part of the company and should be treated like that.

BTW- pencil pusher work their asses off too to the tune of ungodly amount of hours. There are few easy gigs out there . . .

Just because I gloat to the haters on here about great benefits, retirement and medical we get doesn't mean I'm suggesting we just get it for free. I'd say a majority of the people that I work with hold up there end of the bargain work wise.

We average 10 hours of work a day, BTW.

As of last month I am now a union member. Portland was one of the last major cities that wasn't union for working in the TV industry.

Longshoremen up and down the West Coast handle most of the US Asian trade. This cargo is handled carefully because it is understood that damage to cargo benefits no one and simply gives the bosses an issue to bludgeon the workers. That is why the auto operation in the Portland/Vancouver area has a very low incidence of damage. Longshoremen constantly receive lectures from the leadership on this issue. When longshoremen handle delicate cargo like reefers, it is understood that here is a special responsibility in handling perishable cargo. This is not idle supposition. It is knowledge gained from 20 years of experience on the waterfront.

Therefore, the longshoremen who work grain have absolutely nothing to gain by sabotaging the work at United and it certainly would not be Longshore Union policy. Everybody understands this, including the employers. The employers, however, have much to gain. They can smear the longshoremen and engineer a pretext for a lockout. There is nothing new about such tactics. In the past, mine owners arranged for their own mines to be dynamited to frame up strikers. Police agents infiltrate peaceful demonstrators to instigate violence.

The bulk of the public, however, don't understand this. While they may not like corporations, they don't understand provocations. They can't believe that employers would sabotage their own operations to smear workers, but it has a long and sordid history.
