How would you explain the Higgs to a friend at a bar?

A: In a bar, I'd probably use one of those analogies. The real important thing for me is that fundamental particles are as far as we can tell zero-dimensional particles. They have no radius. You can't think of fundamental particles as being glass marbles. They literally have no extension in space. They can never bump into anything else.

It's all about interactions. It's about them exchanging other particles as forces. With a particle like the electron — what gives the electron mass is really inertia, that's the property that we associate with massive particles. Mass and inertia go together.

So since an electron or a quark has no extension in space, you sort of wonder where did the mass go? Well it's not that the mass resides with the electron or the proton. It's that the mass comes from its interaction with other things. And in this case, it's the Higgs field that gives this point particle — the electron — the appearance of inertia. That is what allows it to act like it's resisting changes in its motion.

Whereas you have other particles like the photon which has no mass, and because of that it can go at the speed of light, whereas a massive particle will never be able to go at light speed.

From what is known about the particle now, physicists have said the Higgs boson may spell the universe's doom in the very far future. That's because the mass of the Higgs boson is a critical part of a calculation that portends the future of space and time. Its mass of 126 times the mass of the proton is just about what would be needed to create a fundamentally unstable universe that would lead to a cataclysm billions of years from now.

I think you meant to post this in a thread about the last 40 years of never-ending war.

...as you type on a computer or smartphone that would not exist if not for similar prior particle physics research

Well, I guess those discoveries did cause him to waste money on buying the computer/phone and time spent on the message board so his statement is still true!

scientists found evidence (higgs boson) that space is full of molasses (higgs field) that keeps some particles from moving as fast as they otherwise naturally would, and that resistence is the origin of mass.

This is pretty cool stuff, but damn is it hard to really wrap your mind around. At least my mind. There are about a half dozen different types of Higgs Boson particles theorized, I wonder if they discovered one, or more types of HB's.

As far as other research coming from all this, I'm waiting for some quantum computing. When that's worked out there should finally be all sorts of modeling done that can't be accomplished with modern technology. Like accurate modeling of the weather, or even cooler, of the brain. And that's not too far in the future.

Well GOD never explains the scientific reasons for things. GOD may be good at some things, but not science. He is a hell of a writer, wrote quite a good book. And if you ever need anyone smited, GOD is awesome at that too. You just got to know what to expect from GOD.

    EDIT:
Next time you go to church, you can tell the priest that you have been reading the words of GOD, and they finally make sense.

And a little more thorough explanation, still without having to understand the math. I like these ones, they are quick and helpful.

    thanks! It helped a bit.

I did some digging, and found this one that helped me a bit. It's still kind of a huge "wtf?" though.
