Freeman: Qualifying Offer For Blazers G Eric Maynor "Unlikely"

So, you'd like to have Maynor be our BIG free agency signing!!! Funny and short sighted. Use the real cap space first then try to sign backups. If he signs a multi-year deal with us we'll keep his bird rights. Don't see how this is very important at this juncture.

 

How do you think that Maynor would be our big free agent signing? If he stays at his QO; that's only 3.4 mil. Don't we have much more cap space than that?

 

Again, his cap hold is $5.8M out of a possible $13M. Its a big chunk and the difference between an elite and average player. Better to take our chances on losing Maynor and sign an elite FA or do un-even trade for cap space. THEN, AFTER signing, turn attention to Maynor and rest of bench. We may be able to sign him for an exception after our cap space is gone.

 

That hold is there until he signs a contract. You act as though it's there forever. If Maynor doesn't get good offers and decides to play out a year for next season; that hold is released and we are on the hook for 3.4 mil.

 

I am aware the cap hold is there until Maynor signs his contract (probably around July 15th). Last year the waiting was a about a week and a half. Teams could only "agree" to terms until then.
Maynor is not a first rate, high value Free agent. You may have noticed that the signings and agreements are almost always done in order of their value. Best Free Agents first, and scrubs in late September.
Ask yourself - WHY would Maynor's agent take a low offer on the first day? He won't. He'll wait to see if another team will offer him MORE MONEY. That will destroy our cap space while we are trying to get the elite guys!!!

 

Pretty easy. The other guards will get more. I don't know if you haven't noticed, but the back-up PG and SG list has a lot of cash going around. And we saw Hickson look good in Portland after waiver, yet he couldn't get paid. I think the same questions will come up with Maynor. Yes, Maynor is doing better in Portland, but he was terrible in OKC this season. I see the same principle happen this summer.

 

The principle in play here is NOT TO RUSH to sign your bench guys. Let them see what OTHER offers they may get and then make your decision to go higher or not. We did this with JJ and we got him for $4M/yr. If we do the same with Maynor we might get him for $2M/yr. He's got a career average of 5 points and 3 assists per game.

 

It kind of depends. Who are you expecting to sign as a free agent? I personally am hoping for a unbalanced trade as my BIG acquisition of the summer. I don't see us signing a young defensive minded FA Center. The better options seem to be with trades.

My next priority is signing Maynor and drafting a young SG. That is how I would like to see it play out long term.

 

You are not getting Maynor for 2 mil a year. So you can forget about that. We already know that several teams wanted Maynor off the Thunder. Like the 76ers. So you risk the chance of losing him in FA.
